minetest, a minecraft like game - possible to port to irix?

Unread postby MrBill » Thu May 05, 2016 12:30 pm

Ive been wasting a ton of time on this game at work, runs great, and the source is available, I'm no programmer though, what would it take to get it running on irix, is that even possible? it does run under mac and linux. At the lest i could probably get the server compiled, but it would be much more interesting to see if i could get the client running.

Interesting one. It's mainly written in Lua, and there is a port of that for IRIX in Nekoware, so it certainly might be possible to compile. I might have to have a look at it if I get some time...

If it's anything like Minecraft, the limiting factor would probably be the gross CPU and RAM requirements to get anything approaching a decent framerate.

Minecraft is a super hog of resources.

I don't know how wise it is to be running IRIX on the internet, in today's crazy world where security vulnerabilities are now found daily. IRIX probably has a billion of them.

Isn't the main reason Minecraft is a resource slut because it's still running entirely on top of Java?

Most likely. I've seen Minecraft using more than 1 GB of RAM in some cases. It used to keep going until it crashed.

That would be my thought as well. I'd be very intrigued to see what the CPU/RAM requirements are of Minetest when compared to Minecraft. As it doesn't use Java, hopefully it'll run better on older platforms.

There's stories of minecraft generating logfiles into the tens of gigabytes.
Most dedicated servers these days are suggested to have 32gb ram allocated to them. Sheer madness!!

I really like minecraft, it is crazy how you can make it all work together, see what you can make given the peices. I like mods that add nuclear reactors, automated quarrys, and stargates, among a bunch of other stuff. There is a mod that adds a whole cpu, capable of running MS bassic off a floppy disk image. Crazy stuff. However, it is one hell of a resource hog, and the soulution is to just throw more and more ram and processor power at it to temporarily get ahead of the lag. Minetest runs, really really nice, albeit quite minimal in content, hence the interest in getting it running on the old sgi hardware.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like it'll happen. Minetest appears to run on the Irrlicht engine which isn't available for Irix, if you wanted to you could probably port Irrlicht or rewrite the game to use OpenGL + Motif calls but it would be pretty time consuming.

We had some previous discussions on irrlicht porting to IRIX : viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16730341&p=7387032&hilit=irrlicht#p7387032

There are older threads of irrlicht compile attempts back in 2005. IMO porting irrlicht to IRIX is the best approach to get this working. I just have no idea how time-consuming it is to do this.
