browser war ii (and iii, iv, and v)

Unread postby hamei » Tue Oct 13, 2015 11:17 pm

Need a browser ... not for web surfing but just to look at Help files and such.

Thought of Dillo but current versions don't build with MIPSPro and the dependencies are not acceptable to me. Dillo 2 would be okay but it doesn't like opening files :

Code: Select all

** ERROR ** dpi.c: can't start dpi daemon

There's Netcrap 4, which would probably work but in fact, I'd rather have Netscraps 3. There must have been an Irix version, but not in the 6.5 CD's ?

Mosaic ?

I'm kind of at a loss here, accepting suggestions ... it needs to be simple and clean tho, no pointless garbage tyvm ma'am.

Once upon a time I put every Netscape version I could find on my FTP: ftp://ftp.jurassic.nl/pub/irix/netscape/

Thank you, Mr J-J ! You are a scholar and a gentleman.

2.02 bus errors on 6.5 but 3.03 runs. Almost posted a reply here with it but there's about 4,000 javascript errors per minute with it. Looks nice, tho.

Using Mosaic 2.7 at the moment, that is reading all the help files I've tried so far. Not too bad.

Thanks a lot. Browsing documentation from Netscape 4.79 is much faster than the built in mozilla. And even posting works. At least on a very minimal level. :-)

I should get Mosaic-CK working on Irix again. It has a number of improvements.
smit happens.

I have heard that Netscraps 0.9 was the bee's knees because it didn't wait for the entire page to be downloaded before it started to display. But I couldn't find a 0.9 for 6.5 ... the earliest Netscraps I could find that would run on 6.5 is 3.0.

Now there is a real advantage to open source. Mosiac 2.7 does some oddball stuff when it sees something it can't understand. Any page with newerr code, it tries to download because it thinks it's a binary. This isn't a problem for reading docs but kind of a pain for web surfing.

Floodgap works good with Mosaic tho. Maybe I should check you with Web Explorer :D That was the best browser ever (except for no tabs.)

Can we reproduce Proxomitron ? That might be more useful than making Fireflop 47 run on Irix ....

Yeah, the content-type problems are fixed in Mosaic-CK. I'll put it on the Indy and let it chug out a build when I get back.

Proxomitron's an interesting idea.
