Thanks Dex!

Regarding 1.7.1, it's a toughie as IMO it does work fine. I suppose it could be moved to obsolete for now as it can always be moved back if anyone reports any issues with the 1.8.3 build.

Alternatively, if enough people agree, it could be moved to current to replace the even older version in there. I'd be happy to give it my vote!

I've been doing some research into this. In short, it's not an rdesktop issue.

The problem is that 24bit support was retired by MS in RDP from Vista/Server 2008 onwards. Only 16bit and 32bit are supported (well, technically Vista and 2008 support 8bit as well). 24bit should theoretically work if you RDP to an XP or Server 2003 machine. Try as I might, I've not found a workaround for enabling 24bit support in later Windows versions. Hence with my Server 2008 R2 VM that I RDP into, I'm stuck with 16bit colour :(

Yeah that's what I have found also.. grrrr Microsoft you puddings..

But what if, you RDP to an XP type machine that is then RDP-ing to a newer machine? Think I need to fire up a few VMs.

I'll admit I have no experience with RDP, but surely 24-bit and 32-bit are the same thing, just RGB vs RGBA?
