Developing IRIX software for the retrochallenge.

Unread postby hazelden » Fri Dec 30, 2011 4:27 am

Hi. I have an SGI O2 and I'm interesting in developing some IRIX software for the RetroChallenge. I was wondering if someone with an SGI system and a copy of the MIPSpro compiler would be willing to provide me a shell account for compiling code.

Thanks,
Andrew

Cray-cyber.org have MIPS Pro on their 16CPU Origin 2000. They had the machine running recently but were not ready for logins on it since the move... I've been on their 50 CPU e10k for like weeks without anyone else on it.

I am sure there have been other shell account topics on these forums but can't be bothered searching if you can't.

Hi Pymble.

Thanks for your reply.

I did a search before posting my inquiry. I was aware of the thread from 2006 on Shell accounts to allow software development but didn't think it would be polite to reactivate a 5 year old thread. Naturally, the link to the SGI Developer Program is no longer active.

Regards,
Andrew

Last time I tried ( a week ago or so ) I could log-in as a guest with no issues... (I don't have any permanent account with them).

Cheers

How retro do you want?

I have an 8-proc O2000/IRIX 6.5.30 box (not retro using the 10-year rule on the software side), or a 6-proc CHALLENGE L with 6.2 (if you're really interested this can go to 5.3 if I put in the quad-150 IP19 instead of the IP25s, but that would be low-priority right now). Both of these are power-munchers, so I'd rather have them on a schedule rather than whirring away sucking the kilowatt-hours.

A number of people have Origin300-class machines that are probably available.

If you have code that merely needs to be compiled then you'll probably have better luck then if you're looking for a "keep it on for whenever I want it" box for timesharing.
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

There are those who say I'm a bit of a curmudgeon. To them I reply: "GET OFF MY LAWN!"

Yeah I emailed them a week or two ago and they said they were still reintegrating accounts, I just tried then and its still works for guest but not my personal account. The guest account is public access which means anyone could tamper with you source files.

Thanks to Pymble's suggestion I was able to use the guest login to access the Cray-Cyber network's o2000.cray-cyber.org (SGI Origin 2000) system. The system runs IRIX Release 6.5 IP27 o2000 Copyright 1987-2002. I was able to compile a simple test.c file using the installed MIPSpro C compiler. I've sent an email to the admin contact requesting an account.

Thanks for everyone's help on this. I really appreciate the assistance.

Regards,
Andrew
