Fuel R14000 512Mb

Unread postby cascatino » Mon Jan 29, 2018 10:46 am

Hi there, I tried to pull off the screenshot 'cause some posts below I put the hinv text with code tags, but I failed.

This is a fuel belonged to a dear friend of mine, it has some issues which I hope to solve (with your help!)

ciao a tutti

Nice little system, and should be up to 1.5GB of RAM with a bit of fixing. Do you have any photos?
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

Oh it's a lovely machine, she's my first sgi (i'm waiting for an O2 too).

About the RAM modules: I did a check and Irix (or the PROM) tells me that the 512Mb DIMM modules aren't responding well so the mahcine disabled it.
Actually I removed them, next time I'll mount only them in the first bank (slot 0 and 2, I know).

Here's a shot I did as soon as the fuel crossed my door, actually I'm looking for a door for a good price, if you have one.... ;-)

Long ago I had a Fuel that only the first bank worked - I could enable the second bank - it even seemed to work, but would fail on next post. Hope this isn't that machine, or that it hasn't the same problem. I figured a broken connection between the memory controller and slot or a failing controller.

If you find your 1gb kit is just bad, I think I have some 1gb kits I could sell.

Well, as much as I'd like to rip the front door off my own Fuel, I'm afraid I'm going to have to pass. Hope you find one though! :)

Anyway, it's a very decent little starter system. As you've seen, the Fuel can be a bit finicky and flaky, but they are pretty speedy for SGI systems (when they work).

The weird thing about tha RAM hinv text passage is that the two 512Mb weren't even there when I performed the hinv command! How is this possible?!

Another thing: why on earth the fuel manual speaks about "pairs" and "sockets" and the PROM deals with banks?! It drives me crazy, sockets and banks aren't the same thing either!
Actually I have the first 256MB mounted on socket 0 and the second one on Socket 3. Pulled off the two 512Mb because of the disabling message, I'll try to mount them on socket 0 and 3 alone, wothout the two 256MB and see what happens...but I have to deal with other little big issues on this machine so, my scientific approach (solve one issue at a time) would be not so straight.

Once the memory modules are disabled the PROM probably doesn't even check if it's there.

Haha, documentation and software out of sync? Never...yeah, you have to just let things like that go.

Try opening up the prom command monitor and type in the command "enableall" without the inverted commas. Reboot the machine and check see if all of the RAM is enabled.

Thank you, already performed the command the PROM said the two banks of 512Mb RAM weren't working fine and disabled them...

Did you find a faceplate for it?
