(less) dubious Onyx350/4 - 8CPU/V12/MAD/RAD/FW/USB/FC/10Gbe

Hi Nekochaners,

thought I would post new hinv for dubious (was Tezro) as it has now morphed into Onyx350/4 with V12 and various other bits of paraphernalia inside.

Main details are: 2 x Numalink'ed Onyx350/4 with 4 x 1GHz + 4 x 800MHz, V12, 16GB RAM, RAD/MAD PCI Audio Cards, LSI Dual 4GB FC, Adaptec 3 x USB + 2x Firewire (reports as DM10) and 10Gb Ethernet (Neterion XFrame) running IRIX 6.5.29.

So less dubious than before and original Tezro, that started this rebuilt is now gutted and banished to the garage, once I have removed all the part from it I am going to use it as a garden seat, as curved plastics are quite comfortable and steel chassis is pretty robust... ;-)
Please do not say this is sacrilege, as chassis got bent on shipping and so not really a keeper.

Rest of hinv is pretty much as per original hinv posting: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16732345

Motivation for posting updated hinv was due to putting in 10Gb Ethernet, was hoping to get big NFS performance boost with this.
The card is SGI sourced Neterion XFrame and the optical interface is: Infineon XPAK 850mm Optical (it confirms to XFP standard I think).
EDIT: Further reading on XPAK ... it is not Infineon brand but industry form factor/electrical spec defined by: Infineon, Intel & Picolight. Different to XFP, which has same electrical as SFP+, but slightly bigger form factor. Other related GBIC standards are: XENPAK (precursor to XPAK from Agilent/HP) & X2 (Cisco only I suspect, but has 10GB-T available :-( ).
I did this at expense of voiding the warranting and taking off the big sticker attempting to stop you.

Was hoping that you might be able to swap this out for 10GBASE-T one, but the form factor appears to be have been supplanted by SFP+ and only copper connection is 10GBASE-CX4.

I had to move equipment to be next to 10Gb Ethernet switch to test it, but cannot keep it where it is, so will have to work out a not to expensive way to get onto copper based 10Gbe network.

Hi Nekochaners,

seems that Chimera (Origin350/Onxyx350/4/Tezro/Fuel) XIO2 is not available for use in chassis without CPU board (IP53_4CPU or IP59_4CPU)

After bit of swapping and testing, it is always that case that L1 never reports either Odyssey (V12) or DM3 when installed in chassis without CPU board.

So to get a combination that allowed V12 / DM3 to work I had to swap out 4x1GHZ board and replace with 4x700MHZ board.

Here is resulting hinv (+V12 with DCD / + DM3 / + DM10 / + 10GbE):

You can see that the fans report differently for CPU Less case which has:

FAN 2 EXHST 2 Fault

while with CPU board EXHST 2 is no longer reported and instead has:

FAN 4 ODY Enabled

In both cases total of 5 Fans reported.

Summary:

It is not possible to use "standard" CPU-Less (no IP53/IP59 CPU Board) Origin350/Onyx350 Chassis to provide XIO2 based expansion.

This might be possible with MPX Chassis (which has IP53_0CPU board) and so is likely to behave the same as Chassis with IP53_xCPU / IP59_4CPU boards and have XIO2 slot enabled.

So I have now decided to split my Origin350/Onxy350 into two sets, one for media (V12/DM3/Audio) and one for compute (2 x IP59_4CPU == 8 x 1GHZ) with G2 (ATI graphics) with Numalink btw computes & XIO2 to ATI which is AGP mutant and has special riser.

Pending finding AC Power 2U Numalink (3) Router, in which case I will link them all together.

The card is SGI sourced Neterion XFrame and the optical interface is: Infineon XPAK 850mm Optical (it confirms to XFP standard I think).
EDIT: Further reading on XPAK ... it is not Infineon brand but industry form factor/electrical spec defined by: Infineon, Intel & Picolight. Different to XFP, which has same electrical as SFP+, but slightly bigger form factor. Other related GBIC standards are: XENPAK (precursor to XPAK from Agilent/HP) & X2 (Cisco only I suspect, but has 10GB-T available :-( ).

Was hoping that you might be able to swap this out for 10GBASE-T one, but the form factor appears to be have been supplanted by SFP+ and only copper connection is 10GBASE-CX4.

I had to move equipment to be next to 10Gb Ethernet switch to test it, but cannot keep it where it is, so will have to work out a not to expensive way to get onto copper based 10Gbe network.

The simplest least expensive way is to take the copper 10GBASE-T SFP+ out of the switch and put a 10GBASE-SR SFP+ into it. Then you can connect them with a multimode fiber with LC connectors.

It may also be possible to source a DA (direct attach) cable with XPAK on one end and SFP+ on the other.

Hi robespierre,

my netgear switch is XS712T, so I purchased a couple of 10Gb SFP+ SR transceivers (for switch), which worked fine with LC/LC SR/Multimode patch cable I had. Problem is that switch is in middle of house in comms cabinet under staircases and computers are either in basement or my study and cabling is all cat5/6.

Actually cat6e for main cables and some cat5 where it is never going to be high bandwidth (cat6e is much thicker, stiffer and harder to work with).

Hence need to move 350s to stair well to test.

Cheapest way appears to be to try to hack Cisco X2 module, but this is heading into unexplored territory.

OK, you're way ahead.
I don't think cat5 or cat5e is adequate for 10gbase-t over any appreciable distance; what I have read points to cat6 or cat7 being required.
I don't know anything about XPAK / X2 conversions. They both use XAUI interconnect but I'm sure there are some electrical differences.
