Onyx 4/G2N - 4x1GHz/4x700MHz with G2N/Voyager/ATI Graphics

Hi Nekochaners,

I have continued to try various combinations of Onyx 4 chassis’s with V12 & SG2 graphics.

To test that the Onyx 4/G2 (ATI Graphics with no CPUs) is pretty much a standard Chimera, I put a 4x700MHz CPU Processor board from deskside Tezro into the CPU-less G2 chassis. As the G2 has no IO9 board I then numalink'ed it to second 4x1GHz Onyx 4.

To get this up and running I had to do clean IRIX install, as I could not get existing IP35/V12 Graphics boot disk to upgrade to SG2 graphics.

This setup works. So I have have: [Onyx 4/Onyx 4 with V12] combo and [Onyx 4/Onyx 4 with SG2 (Voyager/ATI] combination.

By adding of 4x700MHz CPU board to G2, that makes it an G2N node now (as per "SGI Onyx Next Generation Scalable Graphics Platform User’s Guide" documentation: http://irix7.com/techpubs/007-4634-001.pdf).

I have yet to manage to get V12 or DM3 to work properly in a CPU-less chassic due to issues with FAN speeds, that result in machine shutting down before boot completes. So I have also recorded the l1 env result to try to see what is happening with fans on this test:

Getting to this stage took quite a long time as I once more went from using IRIX 6.5.21 then updated the up to 6.5.25 to ensure I got SW installed correctly.

I have still not managed to Get V12 or DM3 working in standalone chassis.....
Am thinking now that I will keep Tezro board in the Onyx 4 to make G2N.

Nekochaners,

here is picture of G2 upgraded to G2N:

And here is rather primitive SG2 graphics following initial 6.5.21 install:

I ended up doing 2 IRIX installs as first one had too many issues.

One of problems is that SG2 graphics initialisation uses a perl script in /etc/rc.2.d and the first install did not include perl, so script failed and so I got no graphics.

In the second install I added extra distribution of fw_perl (may_04 version) into install and things went much better.

Also as I added the board from Tezro into the G2 to make the G2N I needed to purchase a new set of longer screws as the Tezro screws are too short for Orgin/Onyx. FYI the right screw size for securing down the processor board are: M4 x 20mm (+ washers).

Here is 4 x 1G/4 x 700MHz machines moved down into basement... I am not going to do much more work on this pair for now as I need to get V12/DM3 setup working with other pair.
