Took a while as I had troubles getting the tezo on network... reminded me of historical issues I have had with IRIX DHCP client.

Interesting aside, when I go the graphical UI "About This System" (is that steal from Macs ), it reports as:
"Onyx3 InfinitePerformance, Fuel"

Shutting down now as getting this box up and running has taken much longer than I first expected. I will wait for ACARD scsi/sata box to come before I install fresh os and use this again.

Looks like I might have some Octane parts go up for sales now as I do not need some of stuff in Octane that is replicated in Tezro.

Also I am surprised that Tezro is actually quite quiet.

My Mac Pro is louder than Tezro I think.

NOTE: I have started to move from Tezro Deskside to Tezro Rackmount, but this then morphed into Onyx 4 on the way... see latest hin v in later postings...

I agree also, I consider my Octane2 and my Tezro to be quite pleasantly quiet, especially compared to the ungodly racket that an un-PWMed Xeon fan puts out...

Hi Nekochaners,

in deciding to move from deskside Tezro to rack mount Tezro, dubious has now morphed into Onyx 4 (i.e. Chimera Origin/Onyx).

Here is current hinv. It took me quite a bit of effort to get to this point as I got a bunch of rack mount Onyx 4's from Mopar (mopar5150) (awesomely well packed and delivered to Australia) and took up where his testing (see here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16732353 )stopped.

The issues I had included: one box had Tezro serial, the L1 controller versions where not all the same and newer versions (1.48.1) than I have software for (my IRIX collection goes to 6.5.29, which is fine as far as I am concerned, as later versions tended to strip things out rather than add new features) and I wanted to include some of older apps that where on historical IRIX distributions, but got removed in 6.5.22 .

So where I have got to after much physical swapping of internals, l1 controller manipulations and multiple network IRIX installs is: Onyx 4 (350 ?) in 2 rack mount bricks with 4 x 1G + 4 x 800Mhz + V12/DCD.
I have not managed to get working DM3 yet, due to problems getting third CPU-less third brick up and going.

Notes to hardware hackers:
1. DCD was removed from original dubious deskside Tezro V12 and put into new Onyx rack V12, so no issues with DCD across desk/rack systems
2. Getting l1 versions aligned was biggest problem. I fixed this by by doing series IRIX installs going back to IRIX 6.5.21 -> 6.5.22 -> 6.5.25 and using the original 6.5.30f install on mopar5150 Onyx 4. As I did updates I kept archiving off all flashsc versions and l1.bin files (/usr/sbin/flashsc & /usr/cpu/firmware/l1.bin). By using 6.5.30f flashsc I was able to get to older l1 version, but only on the local brick. I could not get update to work across bricks (tried --sc -f <l1-ver> all, local & --sddev /hw/module/...). Only way to get updates installed was by going through each chassis and setting them up as stand alone nodes (i.e. lots of hardware pulling apart to make sure that each one had disk to boot from and IO9 board). Then once standalone node was up using appropriate flashsc / l1.bin combination to get things aligned to consistent versions.
3. Getting Numalink connection up and running across asymmetrical cpu modules (4x1GHz / 4x800MHz) required me to do l1 “config reset”, then “brick rackslot n n” id assignments.

At one point I completely bricked a brick, by using l1 code from 6.5.21 on brick with 4 x 800Mhz board. This is now revived again by combination of further board swaps, hardware resets (l1 “debug” + “go cac” stuff as per nekochan thread here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16727613&p=7359126&hilit=go+cac#p7359126 ) and l1 manipulations.

Also on both main machines I kept getting cpu fault when trying to start console based network install. Work around was to do use graphics UI for install.

I still have some unresolved problems... like how to get graphics out of chassis and onto XIO connected V12 or have DM3 on this. To make space for graphics card or DM3 I had to use 4 x 800 on one brick, as 4 x 1G takes up all the physical space.

I have pictures of various internals which I will post later, as these should help others.

This task would have resulted in very expensive bricked Chimera boxes without nekochan info. I think I have accidentally found way to change rackmount Tezro serial into Mxxxx series numbers, which allow much more flexibility....

Note: this is CPU-less board, but nothing special beyond having no cpu. Will test converting it to GN2 by putting in CPU module.

6. Origin/Onyx/Tezro - XIO/PCI Riser Board






As I have machines out and open regularly at the moment, let me know if there is some internal details you are after.

Trivial aside, as part of doing surgery, I pulled all the G2/ATI boards and parts out of the G2 brick and installed an XIO/PCI riser to see if I could get V12 to work in that configuration, but connected to other Onyx 4 (via external XIO cable) machine did not recognise the V12.

I then put together the G2 board brick as fully bootable V12 Onyx and sure enough it came up as Onyx 4. So I am pretty sure that the CPU-less modules are just that exactly... standard Chimera chassis with no CPU board and other bits missing, but otherwise identical.

I then reassembled all the G2/ATI internals back into what was previously Onyx 4 V12 chassis (as this was reporting with Pxxxx Tezro serial number).

NOTE: After re-reviewing mopar5150 testing results (here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16732353 ), I think is was due to John setting Pxxxx Tezro serial on what was originally Mxxxx machine, and so it happily reset serials without bumping into the Pxxxx -> Mxxxx block that stops you from flipping a Tezro into an Onyx/Origin.

G2 Graphics worked fine and after startup has reconfigured as Mxxxx chassis (via XIO connection to other Onyx 4)

Also what was previously G2 chassis but now with CPU module, XIO/PCI Riser, IO9 & V12 also boot up fine as standard Onyx 4...

So all these Chimera chassis and boards appear to be totally swappable.
