It took a long time, and more money than I originally planned, but I finally managed to get my first Octane running and nicely upgraded to nearly max spec original Octane. I also fixed the lightbar with some soft white LEDs. I think it came out really nice. The scuffs look way worse in the photo than in real life though. Time to break out my plastic model buffing kit and see what I can do with it.

I've got another Octane that Mr Bill sent when I thought this box was dead from bent front plane pins. The problem with that one is that it ran too darned good from the start. Now that this one is fully running I'm going to try to clear some space off the desk and start playing with the other one to see all the awesome stuff Mr Bill sent (dual SI cards, and I have an extra SI card from my first... is triple SI even possible? I don't know, but I'm going to find out :) )

The LEDs came out amazing. They look bright white in the photo, but they are a much softer white in real life. In person they look exactly the way I remember the originals.

I managed to put the new LEDs in without damaging the original board, but did some of the craziest "please don't touch" layout of my life. These are the best photos I got, and this was before I had to push everything way down. In the end I added a bit of liquid electrical tape, just to the leads, to make sure the wires did not touch anything.

My next project, after inventorying the box Mr Bill sent, will be restoring the plastics. Fortunately, I happened upon some spare broken plastics from an original Octane that I can practice on with different techniques before going to town on either of these boxes. The picture really highlighted the scuffs, but they are very superficial. I think a little buffing and they will all come right out.

The light bar does look great, something I will have to address with all my Octanes very soon. They all work, but a little flat, I want them to look like a damn disco!

There is not a lot of room in there, but probably enough for a bank of small RGB LEDs and a couple of wires leading to an atiny (or similar embedded chip) mounted under the white enclosure. From there you could snake some wires through the case to the serial port and use that port configure blinky-light goodness.

Looks great on the picture above. I made a similar modification to the light bars of my two Octanes end of 2016 but used only one LED:

The color on the picture comes out a little bit too yellow compared to reality. Not sure how close this is to the original color. The LEDs emit light upright from the front.

How does yours look when viewed directly from the front?

It is possible to see two distinct light sources when viewed exactly from the front, but within 15 degrees or so they combine into a single solid white bar.

Thanks for the frontal picture, I think it still looks great. Maybe when you bend the LEDs a little closer to each other, but then the rest of the light bar will get less light, too.

There's this picture of an original light bar from Igor Kromin's website:

I think it comes out a little dark and the light bar is not that well illuminated. Is this really how it originally looked? Well, it might also depend on the used camera.
