Octane2: 2xR14k@600MHz, V12, 4.5Gb

Unread postby nongrato » Mon Aug 24, 2015 8:57 am

Last weekend I traveled to Moscow(~700kms from my place) to get myself a very phat Octane2. This used to be a Smoke system at Mosfilm. Originally it was equipped with a PCI-cage, three FC cards and a Dmedia board(no cables or VBOB), but I removed them because: 1) I can't make use of them, 2) fastfan.

Cosmetic condition is fair(especially after car plastic polish treatment), but the front door is missing, I am looking to buy one.

Impressive! That's pretty much as maxed out as they come. Well worth the long drive I'd say!

Thanks, guys!

Alright, that DCD option appeared to be an useless piece of junk. The display mode is set to 72Hz, but my monitors actually don't do more than 30Hz. After five minutes my eyes feel like they're gonna bleed and the powerflip demo performs at 30FPS maximum(on a V12!) If someone wants it, I will willingly trade it for something useful, like a front door for my Octane2.

I would indeed make that swap, but fear posting a plastic door weighing 10 grams to Russia would cost more than an Octane 2

Actually nongrato if you make the journey to the UK, I'll give you a CRT (BNC/VGA) monitor that works at higher res and a front door for free.

Unless you're running an IRIX install modified specifically to suit Smoke, there should be a number of alternative DCD-compatible display formats to select from.

If you'd like to use the DCD to span your display across two monitors (of equal resolution), look in xsetmon for display formats prefaced with "2@" that meet your requirements.

Don't load a 2@ format if you have only one monitor connected, the single display will only receive half of the signal and may flicker horribly.

If you don't wish use a 2@ expanded display (or for the time being have only one monitor), just select any of the other single-monitor formats (that don't include the 2@ preface) that match your single monitor. If your monitor is analog, connect to the 13W3 port, if it's digital connect it to either of the DVI ports. In either case, all three ports will receive the same single image display.

Which ones of them are DCD-compatible?

Thanks, but I think I'm not an imbecile. Of course I tested it with two different sets of monitors: two LCDs, then two CRTs. It doubles the working space, but cuts the performance by the same amount. Absolutely worthless and overrated piece of junk: typical SGI. Thankfully I already have a buyer.

That is a very nice find, looks like it's in great shape too. Hopefully it won't cause you grief like the previous one.

First of all, I must say, that's an amazing system you found! Nice pictures, thank you for sharing.

Beware, those are the Flint/Flame and Smoke-tailored Odyssey (VPro) profiles from Discreet for usage in combination with Stingray (DMediaPro, e.g. DM2 for the Octane2 or DM3 for the Tezro and the VBOB with the DM5 daughterboard) video hardware. The flicker is simply the result of your monitor loading an unusual resolution and refresh rate, which is normally intended for use with a specific SGI-branded 23" or 24" CRT high resolution graphics (IFFFS jargon, i.e. ‘standard’ computer) monitor together with, ideally, a broadcast monitor, where both are synchronized, for the so-called graphics-to-video functionality.

So, if you instead want a multi-head monitor setup with a large desktop, you should ignore those Discreet profiles and rather pick one of the ‘standard’ display resolution and specifically multiple monitor setup profiles (see the lower left-hand panes in xsetmon) as delivered by SGI. Like that you can also simply go for, say, 1920 × 1200 over each of the DCD's DVI outputs, compared to the slightly lower resolution of 1920 × 1154 (as provided by Discreet for Flint/Flame and Smoke usage, as seen in the list in your screenshot; this is due the pixel clock limitation of the DM5, the non-standard implementation of the HD-SDI signal output on the VBOB, or maybe both, as I don't fully recall at the moment).
