New LS1068 with 120gb SSD for /usr/people

Also along with the LS1068 purchase. I picked up a 15k to use as my root drive. Compiled a new .vfo for my dell monitor as well.

Code: Select all

Picked up some Noctua fans to quiet the beast. If it wasn't for the root drive spinning. I couldn't tell it was even on.

The 600MHz Fuel is still a very fine computer. The Fuel gets well-deserved flak for the uninspiring case, but it's the SGI I use by far the most.

I already notice the speed difference, and surprisingly its also very quiet. Well quieter compared to most SGI systems.

Quiet? That Octane2 is quieter to me and runs cooler too. Glad you got her working. I upgraded Miku here with 2GB and a V8 graphics card someone claimed was a V6 so my lucky day!

Yes getting rid of the original PSU fan really helped quiet it down some.

That's a job on my to-do list as well. I'm always impressed by how quiet my Fuel is when I first turn it on - then how loud it is after 10 minutes have gone by!

I'm not too bothered about the case. Sure it's rather PC like, but then the Fuel was designed to be a lower priced SGI machine in a time when SGI were losing money fast. On the plus side, it used the architecture/bus, CPUs (1GHz not withstanding) and graphics options of the Tezro, so from a performance/technical point of view it's pretty decent.

I bought one for a simple reason. I wanted to own one of the last hurrah's of the IRIX/MIPS era and didn't want a large and very noisy Tezro on my desk (as impressive as they are). Since I bought mine incidentally, Ian Mapleson has practically doubled his Fuel prices due to lack of spares, so I look upon mine as somewhat of a bargain of its time. I love my Indigo2 the most out of my SGIs, but I'm proud to own my Fuel as well :)

What are you guys talking about? The Indigo2 I have for sale is not loud at all, except for the HDD on boot. Other than that it is with Alice and Shanghai in terms of noise ( their names are Touhou references )
