R5k O2 - my first SGI system!

Unread postby commodorejohn » Sat Jul 12, 2014 3:26 pm

I originally joined up here to get help with my VAX and Alpha hardware, and didn't plan on getting into SGI or IRIX (I had kind of an idle interest in MIPS as I do in all non-Intel-hegemony stuff, but beyond that...) But I've been a little curious of late, and thanks to the generosity of ScutBoy, who was up in my neck of the woods this weekend, I now have a little O2 sitting on my bedroom floor, wired up to my router and posting this message in Mozilla 1.4.4! Here's the hinv:

Code: Select all

CPU: MIPS R5000 Processor Chip Revision: 10.0
FPU: MIPS R5000 Floating Point Coprocessor Revision: 10.0
1 300 MHZ IP32 Processor
Main memory size: 640 Mbytes
Secondary unified instruction/data cache size: 1 Mbyte on Processor 0
Instruction cache size: 32 Kbytes
Data cache size: 32 Kbytes
FLASH PROM version 4.18
Integral SCSI controller 0: Version ADAPTEC 7880
Disk drive: unit 1 on SCSI controller 0
CDROM: unit 4 on SCSI controller 0
Integral SCSI controller 1: Version ADAPTEC 7880
Integral SCSI controller 2: Version IEEE1394 SBP2
On-board serial ports: tty1
On-board serial ports: tty2
On-board EPP/ECP parallel port
CRM graphics installed
Integral Ethernet: ec0, version 1
Iris Audio Processor: version A3 revision 0
Video: MVP unit 0 version 1.4
AV: AV1 Card version 1, Camera not connected.
Vice: TRE
DMediaPro DM10 FW option: unit 0, revision 1.1.0

It's actually got 8x128MB SIMMs, so I'm not sure why it's only reporting 640MB, but I'll get that sorted out. In any case, quite a respectable little machine, and the inclusion of a FireWire + USB controller card is a pleasant surprise! IRIX thus far is an interesting experience; I'll have to put this baby on my desk at work and play around with it some more in the upcoming weeks.

Thanks again to ScutBoy for hooking me up with this!

So, question: this thing is running IRIX 6.5.12, and I see that Nekoware requires at least 6.5.22, which is supported on an R5k O2, but I don't have install media for it (I've got 6.5 Foundation discs and 6.5.12 overlays.) How can I go about upgrading this? Is there somewhere to download these updates from?

SGIs support folio site cane be signed up for and the update 6.5.22 downloaded for free. Congrats that O2 is much faster than the one I was offering you.

Are you sure it doesn't simply have 4x128MB + 4x32MB?

Quite; I actually had them out and looked when I was trying to figure out if a couple additional sticks I was given would be good to throw in (but they were only 32MB.) Probably I didn't get a couple back in quite right.

Ok. Then it's either a misengaged stick, or a defective one in the 5th or 6th slot causing the 5-6 and 7-8 banks to be considered as filled with 32MB sticks each.

Interesting. My O2 has got 4x 128MB sticks in it, yet only reports as 384MB RAM in the hinv... so possibly a similar / related problem? I never spent any time investigating it... just assumed it was a quirk or the memory modules were incorrectly labelled or something.

I'd assume it was setting aside video memory or something, but A. 384MB is an absurd amount of video memory for a system of this vintage, and B. I thought the O2 had a shared-memory architecture for that...

The numbers (such as 32MB, or 128MB) marked on O2 DIMMs do not mean anything. The only way to determine the size of the DIMMs is using the colored stripes.

Seriously? That's nuts. Is there a guide to which markings mean what?

Something is definitely off. If you have 8x128 MB working DIMMS and working DIMM slots, an O2 will correctly report the full gigabyte in hinv. (I've had quite a few 1 GB machines come through my shop, and they all reported correctly.)
