Every day is a school day, certainly when it comes to SGI gear. The colour coding on my memory modules is indeed different per pair despite all four modules being labelled as 128MB. I'll have to check them later as this will probably explain why they only show up as 384MB!

Well, I checked mine, and all of them except the two 32MB spares I was given are actually 128MB. So either something's screwy with some of the slots, or...hell, I dunno. I'll have to test them individually this afternoon.

It happens. I could only get 6 of the 8 slots on my O2 to work. If I filled all 8, it just frequently crashes with kernel panics, even though the sticks then worked fine when swapped into lower sockets. In the end, I just accepted a drop from 256MB to 192MB.

Scrub the slots with alcohol John, and if you still can't get it to work, I have an R10000 O2 mainboard here I'd be more than happy to send your way.

Okay, I figured it out. The DIMMs are marked with the capacity a pair of them gives, so it's 6x64MB SGI DIMMs plus two unmarked Dataram DIMMs which turned out to be 128MB apiece - yielding 384 + 256 = 640MB. Not super-intuitive, but at least that means that there's nothing wrong with the board!

FWIW, Kingston's fond of this approach when naming/numbering their products, too.
