New bump! Finally added a 120GB SSD, and replaced the 300GB 10K SCSI data disk with a 450GB 15K SAS.

See my other post here for SSD performance results.

Happy new year everyone! 8)

I recently picked up a SAS3442X-R card for my Fuel. Can I run my system disk off this or will I also need the ARS-2160H bridge box? I am assuming I will need the bridge box as well, but I wanted to be sure before I slap down $250 for it.

Thanks

The boot device must be on the U160 bus, but that can indeed be a SAS/SATA inside a bridge box.

However, what you can do is split off /usr and /var onto an SSD which is connected to the LSI card,
that will work ok. Just done it with a Tezro and a couple of 240GB SSDs (one holds /usr and /var,
the other holds the main user account; also fitted is a 1TB 2.5" Enterprise SATA, all three devices
held in a 4-bay IcyBox enclosure which replaced the DVDROM).

Note that the best model SSD to use is the OCZ Vertex2E series. This is because most newer models
will not link correctly to the SAS card (they end up with a 1.5Gbit link by mistake). I think there are
certain fw/bios revisions for the LSI cards which will force the correct 3Gbit link speed for SATA3 SSDs,
but I've not been able to work out which it is (thought I'd succeeded a while ago, but further tests
showed otherwise).

Caveat: a newer model like an 850 Pro would of course give better 4K performance, but in reality it
doesn't make much difference.

Don't expect screaming app speed though, as apps like Firefox is heavily CPU-bound. Seamonkey is
different, it comes up in 2 seconds on my Fuel.

Compromise: use the SAS card and an SSD for /usr and /var, but just employ a good mechanical drive
for the main boot device, eg. any good 15K SCSI like the Fujitsu MAX series. Do this initially, replace
it with a bridge box + whatever later on if you feel it's worthwhile. Most of the useful gain is from having
/usr and /var on an SSD anyway, especially the former since normal user accounts are in /usr/people,
and /var/tmp will be fast aswell.

Great stuff. Thanks for the insight Ian. I think I will do precisely that. Grab a 15K for the system disk and SSD for /var and /usr.

Thanks

Most welcome! 8)

Note if you strike out with SSDs, I do of course have 240GB Vertex2Es available. :D

For reference, here's the output from diskperf on my Fuel when run in /var/tmp (it's accessing a 120GB Vertex2E connected to a 3442X-R):

LSI SAS3442X-R, and no it cannot be used with Octane.
