So today arrives my new CPU :) BIG THANKS to WLATHER...
Boost from my stock R5200/300 is incredible!
What else say?
Monitor connected to my O2 is mirovideo 22" with O2 camera sitting on it -> there is plenty of space :)
Compaq deutch keyboard (for me wery terrible becouse many characters on keys don't match what you get on screen with english setting)
Black logitech optical USB mouse - connected trough original USB/PS2 converter

Hardware unconnected to O2 or not connected everyday :
Adaptec 2940UW PCI SCSI adapter
100Mb PCI second network adapter - useless to me this time
Microtek 636 scanner (very low end but it works)
two ~10GB scsi disks - maybe I will use them somehow externaly

So this is my "number cruncher"

Very nice. Time to update your sig BTW :)

The 600MHz upgrade is on my list of things to do, but those 300MHz modules are hard to find.

I was wery lucky guy, when I was buying O2 I can choose between R10k@195 and R5k@300 R5k@300 has much better skins, and also Ian on his sites nicely describes diferences between R10k and R5k configurations so I choose R5k even for it's lower integer performance.

After 1 month I'v statred to search "for something faster" and I realize that only one faster 5k cpu was released (7k@350) but I'v also realize that it is quite rare. Than I'v found that the 600MHz hack can be done - but after reading article about it I realized that I can't build it myself. So another searching, some mails, fired first deadline, waiting some time, and I have it :)

Do you know if it's possible to have someone perform the upgrade for you?

I have a 300mhz CPU module, and the 600mhz upgrade chip. I just don't have the hardware skills neccessary to perform the upgrade, and would like to swap an already upgraded board for my existing board + cpu.

Any idea who I might contact for sucn an endeavor?

Thanks in advance.

There is a chap here in NZ who I think has 3 R5200 300Mhz machines, think he lurks here as well ... want me to ask if he'd part with some ? I think he wants a 600mhz upgrade himself as well.

Since my O2 canibalized other non functional SGI it results in some HW upgrades. Namely memory 512 -> 576, and harddisk 2x9GB -> 18GB + 9GB. From crashed O2 I have spare parts like AV1 board, some 32MB memory sticks, CDROM. And maybe frontplane (I don't know if it must match mainboard).

So my hinv now looks like:
Code:
CPU: QED RM7000 Processor Chip Revision: 5.3
FPU: QED RM7000 Floating Point Coprocessor Revision: 5.0
1 602 MHZ IP32 Processor
Main memory size: 576 Mbytes
Secondary unified instruction/data cache size: 256 Kbytes on Processor 0
Ternary unified instruction/data cache size: 1 Mbyte on Processor 0
Instruction cache size: 16 Kbytes
Data cache size: 16 Kbytes
FLASH PROM version 4.18
Integral SCSI controller 0: Version ADAPTEC 7880
Disk drive: unit 1 on SCSI controller 0 (unit 1)
Disk drive: unit 2 on SCSI controller 0 (unit 2)
CDROM: unit 4 on SCSI controller 0
Integral SCSI controller 1: Version ADAPTEC 7880
PCI SCSI controller 2: Version ADAPTEC 7880
On-board serial ports: tty1
On-board serial ports: tty2
On-board EPP/ECP parallel port
CRM graphics installed
Integral Ethernet: ec0, version 1
Iris Audio Processor: version A3 revision 0
PCI Adapter ID (vendor 0x9004, device 0x8078) PCI slot 1
PCI Adapter ID (vendor 0x9004, device 0x8078) PCI slot 2
PCI Adapter ID (vendor 0x9004, device 0x8178) PCI slot 3

"New" system disk is Quantum Atlas V 10k rpm 18GB drive.
Measured time for boot identical system (6.5.26) from total start of O2 is ~1.35min witch is better for ~12 seconds compared to old disk (I hoped for bigger speedup).

Always love reading about O2's. Yeah they're a bit slow but what the hell!

You can try and squeeze some more time from your boot process by disabling unnecessary processes at startup.

Turning off esp alone can cut boot time as much as 60 seconds.

For those who don't already have R5K/300 modules, I have several ready-to-go R7K/600 modules available.
And my site now has full benchmark results for the R7K/600.

Computer is connected to internet trouch D-link router witch also acts as dhcp server.
I'm also using NFS to share data with Linux notebook. System also runs fw_samba (swat was/is nice configuration tool) to connection with windows machines. Otherwise is used as day to day computer - e.g. web browsing. Movie watching. And sometimes (when I have "taste???") maya modeling.

Hmm, mostly looks ok, but you could probably safely turn off grio, ipaliases, xlv and yp.

Also, make sure the 'hosts' lines in /etc/nsswitch.conf is set to:

Code:
hosts:                  files dns nis

Lastly, I change the MSGTIME delay in /etc/init.d/network to 0, and the filesystem delay time in /etc/filesystems to 0
(search the file for 'p 5'). Makes bootup quicker if a filesystem doesn't mount, etc.

Ian.
