Octane1 2x300MHz, 2GB RAM, EMXI

Unread postby mrthinlysliced » Sun Apr 15, 2018 6:47 am

A gentleman kindly dropped this off yesterday. Is a best-parts-from-three mismash the chap had obtained after the science department stopped using them. The gent intended to have a bit of fun with it but after 5 years sitting in a corner of his office and having a young family -> goes up on ebay.

Skins are in great condition as is the machine in general - but needs a bit of love to get rid of dust and muck build up (todays job).

Then onto a fresh network install along with the necessary extra tools + locking down the network.

(Anything special I should look out for to get necessary compilers installed?)

First personal SGI :-)

First SGI I've used in 20 years hehe.

Going to have some fun with this. My muscle memory for bash (set -o emacs) is strong and results in constant CTRL-U start agains.

Welcome to the club!

That's a nice config you have there, I hope it serves you well. :D

Cheers! We just finished bath time to brighten up the skins.

I dissembled almost everything and gave it all a good clean - apart from the power supply and underneath the front mainboard. Quite the mess under the rear fan when I took it off, nothing some cotton tips couldn't get to and sort out.

Might have a go at those another time but that's enough for today - still have the naked chassis verified as booting and happy.

Lovely config you have, the dual 300mhz is no slouch and should run just about anything you throw at it.

If it's gonna live on your desk / below your desk consider getting the psu fan and scsi backplane fan swapped for quieter ones.

Thanks Jacques, I do feel a little like I struck gold :-)

Sunlight really changes the green into blue - quite bizarre - it doesn't look that blue in person!

So - I'm more than happy with that - it came up a treat. I may have to have another go at the front door panel again, I didn't go too hard with the cleaning around there out of fear of damaging the lettering, but it still looks to me like there's some dirt there.

And then last night I managed to get IRIX 6.5.30 network installed together with all the bits and pieces.

So now I have an account and can log in - but my user sees these weird fonts on the desktop:

dodgyfonts.JPG

Shouldn't I be seeing the font(1) instead of the font it's using for (2)?

Anyone have any idea where I've gone wrong or what I've done wrong?

Basically I took the 6.5 base plus the 6.5.30 overlays and added everything, removed the java bits in conflicts and installed.

I think I may have skipped using EZSetup to add the account - possible that's the cause?

Cheers for any pointers,

Dan

Wow, looks great! Is this the eBay 'paypal will be refunded job?'

No, the EZSetup should not have that effect.

Just checked my 6.5.30 O2 install, both fonts match. I assume you installed from overlay 1, fed in the other 'disks' and then just went on from there?

Try Toolchest -> Desktop -> Customize -> Desktop Settings -> change Sizes of Dynamic fonts to 'medium.' Log out / log in.

RE: "paypal will be refunded" - yep, I'd kinda written that one off - and a little later the seller replied to my inquiries and we exchanged a few messages that convinced me he was legit -> once he changed the payment method so no need for paypal + cash I had little to lose :-)

Turned out to be quite a gent and someone who cares and enjoys these machines too. He'd done a 6.5 install a couple of nights before bringing the machine over - I'm guessing so he could have a bit of fun with it too :-)

Thanks for the pointer on dynamic fonts - it was already set to medium (I did try changing to the various settings there and logging out, for info) - but no go unfortunately.

Strangely it's for all users (I created a new test account too this time using EZSetup) - it's almost like there is a missing font or the font cache doesn't have all of them.

For the install I network minirooted from 6.5, then bundled all of 6.5.30 overlays and other extras during the (DINA) install:

1
2
3
foundation1
foundation2
dev_foundation
development_libraries
applications
compapps
compiler (MIPSPro bits)

I'm not too invested in this install yet so maybe I'll try redo with a base 6.5 install first and afterwards use the .30 overlays + extras.

You language is incorrect.

From the Toolchest select.. Desktop -- Customize-- Language

Then ensure:

Country is set to Great Britain (English Latin 1....)
Language English (Latin 1....)

Thanks uunix, that's got it, fonts are back to normal and readable now.

PEBKAC error during my "ooo, it's running lets play a little" undoubtedly.

Edit: And just in case someone else comes across this - I'd stupidly set the root account language wrong too, which was the "root" (ha) cause of other account issues.
