i just found a visual reference of what happened: part 1, part 2

Considerating Fukushima's situation, whether or not half of Japan's cell phones were working is of no importance. Either way, these people have a major problem. How long will it take for the radioactivity to reach the West Coast?

There was a really good report all about the quake on Channel 4 last week here in the UK.
I recommend it to anyone.

Also just to put some sanity into the nuclear issue:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/25 ... ng_debunk/

Everyone needs to stop worrying about the reactor and worry about the people who are missing or have no homes.

And as a small addition:
Radiation levels away from the reactor buildings themselves appear to be dropping as of the early hours this morning UK time. Japan's nuclear regulators reported as of the early hours this morning (17th March) that readings at the plant gates had dropped from 0.7 millisievert/hour to 0.3 over the previous 12 hours: workers would be able to endure such levels for months if required, as these hourly doses are equivalent to those sustained by everyone on Earth from background radiation every few weeks.

Unfortunately, it's not all a radioisotope of iodine, radioisotope of cesium has also be detected and it's half life is considerably longer than merely 8 days.

Worth a look - http://xkcd.com/radiation/

Nuclear accidents are serious matters, of course, particularly at the point of the accident itself, but nothing I've seen yet suggests that the issues at the plant will compare even remotely to the devastation already inflicted by the earthquake and tsunami, even factoring in long term effects.

Does Cs accumulate biologically the same way? I know I and Sr are hazardous because they are either identical (I) or very similar (Sr/Ca) to elements that are accumulated.

Looks like there was a failure of the cladding, but less of the Cs will have been emitted than would have been possible in a Chernobyl-type failure because Cs is solid and there wasn"t an explosion.

No. Generally, it's excreted quickly.
