Rayn-Fox, is there way without using Internet to download? How long does a machine like this since it has no planned obsolescence, hot may be problem to work or is identical to x86 machines? Every time I see current work done on it, I feel safer working on SGI is great and wonderful! If you are unable to transfer files with or without internet, just use CD/DVD RW as they are rewritable at all times!

Well, your main options are:

* Transferring via network (which really isn't bad, and is my preferred option as it's by far the easiest - Sharity is available for IRIX and will allow you to natively mount Windows shares on IRIX as another alternative to FTP or NFS shares) - note you don't need Internet access, just local LAN access.

* Removable media such as DVD/CD/Tape.

* An external SCSI hard drive (I haven't tried this myself, and you'd need another machine with SCSI capability and the ability to read EFS/XFS file systems).

The latter two options are of course a lot slower as you have to write the data on IRIX, then shift the media across to another machine to read it. Using a network share is by far the quickest and easiest way of transferring data to other machines.
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

Trippynet, First of all I would like to ask you some doubts: SGI was used in the CGI from 93 to 2009 and is still used in some companies ie SGI can still be used CGI currently right ?? And I was advised to use Octane 2 or tezro because it already can do a good CGI work like the current one or should I use Nitrogen or lithium ?. How do I make the local transfer? Cables? What cable? I think dvd rw may be easier is rewritable at all times. I have a notebook and I intend to use a lot of SGI for CGI mainly in everything that was used okay that 2009 is a long time ago, but I think it's worth it because most people like SGI CGI movies like harry potter, star wars it was ice age.

SGI with CGI is very incredible.

@RobhG
Some questions...

Do you working commercially on CGI content? If "yes":
Do you have some kind of (external/separate) support (person/company) for you Octane2/Tezro or setup?
So do you have then enough spare parts (HW) just in case you have some unplanned downtimes/dropping-outs?
I suppose the rendering for your CGI content will be done remote over network with a render farm or more capable HW?

It's like I would think about using my SPARCstation 2 with not even NetBSD or OpenBSD but SunOS or Solaris 2.4 for editing under VI and for provisioning playbooks (Ansible) for AWS. For editing, SSH and provisioning it's fine, no prob. But HW failures, missing spare parts and support (security updates, stability patches) ... no. Maybe as backup option ... only as a last resort ... mmm ... no.

Anyway: Suerte!
SNI: PCD-4H (sphinx), PCD-3Msx (cupido), SCENIC Pro C5 (scenic)
SUN: SPARCstation 2 (toosy), Ultra 60 (<noname>), Blade 2000 (betsy)

Irinikus, found in my city an Octane 2 that was used for video tomography, so the setup is great for this type of work probably.

escimo, SGI IRIX system and software are very stable, without any bug virtually, it is a pretty good system never seen talk about errors or instability in these systems mainly computer graphics, I will use.

I'm pretty sure some SGI engineers were doing alot of Molly when they designed their machines. They beg to be touched.

But yeah, seriously.

I love IRIX. It's still the most rock solid *nix I've ever used. But my SGI machines sit behind a robust firewall, ssh bastion, and nginx web proxy because they haven't been patched in forever. Security through obscurity - I know. But not willing to take the chance. SGI wasn't really quick on the draw with security patches for IRIX. I know they had the WebForce suite, but IRIX was never really intended to be an Internet facing OS.

Just my experience so YMMV but if you want to run a really kick-ass MIPS SGI system, I've got a 2x600 Octane2, and 4x700 Tezro and a 6x1000 Onyx4, guess which one is most useful? (And your first 2 guesses don't count)...

World domination! Or something...

RobhG: just wondering if you have any experience with SGI machines at all? have you had the chance to use one in recent years?

Not ever used, will octane 2 can be used, I have recommended Octane 2, Tezro or Onyx 3x00, which of them, SGI IRIX Octane 2 reads DVD from (rewritable)
