no sign of hinv here. while running pstree looks like this:

Code: Select all

 \-+- 13769 root /usr/Eclipse/bin/Eclipse
   |--- 13770 root <defunct>
   \--- 13771 root /usr/Eclipse/sysbin/swapmon 5

Yes, when it is just sitting there. But then try Open -> Image -> some_jpeg

That's when I get

Code: Select all

 \-+- 03504 grafix Eclipse
   |--- 03506 grafix /usr/Eclipse/sysbin/swapmon 5
   \--- 04826 grafix /bin/hinv

The swapmon argument does change if you change the monitoring size in the Preferences window. Why would it be looking at hinv to open a jpeg ? Very peculiar .... and I have the same <defunct> thing when it's just sitting there, but when you ask it to open a file, the <defunct> goes away.

At least everything does go away when you close Eclipse, doesn't just sit there zombified.

Whatever happened to Form & Vision, by the way ? Anyone know anyone there ?

Was browsing throught the Eclipse files on the Tezro and found the same photo I posted earlier (shown opened in Eclipse on the Octane2). Looked even closer and the dates on the Eclipse-created files dates predate my acquisition of the Tezro (they also predate the acquisition of that Octane2).

Apologies for chumming the water with this particular red herring. Over the years I went through enough clean installs/reinstalls to make recreating my user environment from scratch a PIA. So I started migrating my user account from one box to the next (or as much of it as was possible). Since I can't recall the last time I actually used Eclipse, that's likely where the Eclipse folder on the Tezro (and Octane2) came from.

As penance for making an error (c'mon, Joe, say it ain't so !!) could you double-click on the eclipse icon and see what happens ? I wonder if you will have the same problem ? Works for foetz, does not for me and Geoman ... trying to figure out what's different :?

I can't recall the last time I actually used Eclipse ...

Me, too. But PSnot 3 is somewhat limited, Eclipse is an odd duck but has a lot more capabilities. Thought I'd get in there and (try to) master that bugger ...

Turns out the folder in my user account was the only place Eclipse existed on the Tezro (knew it was there 'cause I a recent file search for a photo turned up the contained jpg). Went ahead and installed it, the less-than-successful results mirrored what I got with the O350/V12: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16728271&start=15#p7365850

Just noticed I've got a makehuman folder in there too.... and it's never been installed on the Tezro either. :roll:

Thank you. Looks like we'll have to head over to foetz'es house to see what he's doing right ...

I know a different way to do that ... more fun, too :D

hmm really strange. my desktop and x11 settings are hardly customized. i use the default 1280, default colors ... nothing special at all except for the 24bit colors xserver entry.

however, there's one more thing i just remembered: a while ago i noticed that my vpro had odd rev numbers and such. i also posted about back then. maybe for some odd reason my vpro is a tiny little different in some way and that's why it works.
okay, not very likely but right now i have no other ideas :P

Graphics memory, perhaps ? At 1920 x 2400 I am very squished for memory ... 1280 x 1024 you might have a lot more available ? I only show 17 mb of system buffer, software only accumulation buffer ... altho Eclipse works on SI graphics ? So ....

Geoman, what's your resolution / other graphics settings ?

Just to add another (seemingly) random point on the Eclipse map, I just installed it on a system with IR3 graphics - got the same long list of post install ftr errors as with the Onyx IP. Just like then Eclipse broken there too with the same display anomalies that have been reported.

So to recap:
Works on my R12000/V12/DCD Octane2;
Doesn't work on my R16000/2xV12/2xDCD Origin 350;
Doesn't work on my R16000/V12/DCD Tezro;
Doesn't work on my R16000/IR3 Onyx 350
(all the above are running a 24-bit desktop).

Just to complicate the issue:
It *doesn't* work on Geoman's R12000/V12 Octane2 (with, I'm guessing, a 24-bit desktop).
It *does* work on Foetz' R16000(?)/V12/Origin 350 (with 8-bit visuals);

Not much in the way of anything you could hang your hat on.

yeah mine is an r16000, 24bit xserver config and the vpro set to the lowest respective settings.
the difference tho is that i didn't install it but just copied the folder from the other machine when i got the o350.

I've tried both ways :roll: Had it on a disk from an Octane with MXI graphics, didn't work. Reinstalled fresh, doesn't work :(

If it runs for you, foetz, you are the only one. All we have to do is figure out what you did right ....

not working with ir is quite strange. ir's compatibility goes back a decade and it's pretty much the last thing where something doesn't work.
you're sure your eclipse package is fine? this more and more sounds like there's something wrong with the program itself unless you're using the same really deviant settings on all installations.

anyway to get somewhere here i think a blank test installation would be next.

Do you reallllly think that's the case? :roll:

Good idea. Since you're the only one who hasn't tried it, let us know how it goes. Might be interesting to see if you get the same *lengthy* list of ftr warnings I saw both times I installed. The instlog on this IR3 box goes back to 2008 (through dozens of installs), and Eclipse is the only install that generated *any* ftr warnings.

The issue has come up before without resolution, maybe somebody'll get lucky this time:

i have no idea but since it runs fine for me having hardly any custom settings it's one possibility. from his screen shots and past posts i can at least see that hamei has serious customizations done

hehe i actually meant you or hamei using a fresh irix inst :P
running a fresh, official eclipse instalation only makes sense if we're sure that we have the same file.

If you were running a 3840×2400 desktop and were old enough to be humming a song from 1962 you'd be doin' some serious customization too.

Ok, grab the one off of Pete's FTP and you'll have the same one I used this time (used an copy I had archived for the O350/V12).
