IRIX simulation software

Unread postby blowout6 » Fri Sep 27, 2013 3:21 pm

I know there are / were flight sims running on IRIX, commercial and military. Also, I'd imagine there should be driving / racing simulation software. However, Google doesn't have much to show for my limited searches on these topics. Anyone know more of such things?

Nekoware.
  • Flight gear is pretty much a slide show on anything but my quad 1GHz Tezro.
  • bzflag kinda lame tank battle thing, nothing compared to "Zero Ballistics" on a Linux box with a CUDA card
  • gltron is probably in nekoware as well, and that is a amusing for at least a few minutes

Tux racer was ported to IRIX at one stage, lost interest in it after a "promoter" of it pissed me off about the port.
I worked on ARCInc-429 and MIL-STD 1553 avionics buses for a really big 3 man flight simulator on IRIX (and VME) but thats classified.

I have seen a train simulator on Onyx, I think it was used by some indian institution for training.
It was very smooth.

Unfortunately, I guess most of the interesting stuff in this category is probably like that.

I remember precisely when I saw this train simulator I've mentioned above, it was at Imagina, the same year Intel came out with MMX additions to the Pentium line; and they were demoing "descent" in 320x240, next to the train simulator, which ran with multiple pipes.

Haha, it was a good laugh, like comparing a VT terminal to a playstation 4 game.

When InfiniteReality first came out Hughes Aircraft used it to build F-16 fight trainers for Air Force use but I'm pretty sure there aren't any members here who have one of those with the complete virtual reality chamber to go with it...

high-end flight sim setups are pretty neat, with pneumatic cabin motors and all the instruments.
there is a huge difference in brightness between the landscape and lights used for navigation, so they use special "calligraphic projectors" with separate channels for the bright lights, vector controlled.

I wonder how feasible it would be to get TORCS running on IRIX. I suspect it would be better on an Onyx than anything in my humble collection, if it could run on IRIX at all.

Probably any simulator (even driving ones) will be like the high-end flight simulators the other posters have been discussing: they'll be proprietary software and may require specialized hardware (in addition to the IRIX machine).

There was also a racing simulation simply called racer (see http://www.racer.nl). Irix support was dropped a long time ago, but we should have Irix binaries somewhere.

At least on the Air Force base I was on, the F-16 simulator that pilots used on the base I could have sworn ran Falcon 3.0 on the latest and greatest Pentium (this was circa 1994).

I think there were train and subway teaching simulators, but where you would find one I have no idea.

But what would be fun ...... Onyx2, pickup truck, Honda generator, home-made cockpit with four or more lcd panels and a fpv radio-controlled helicopter.

That would be kickass and feasible, too :)

Or on a less portable level, perhaps an HO railroad ? father-son project ?
I spent a fortune on booze, birds, and fast cars ... the rest I just squandered

If you want to run TORCS, you may have to build an older version, since the current Version requires OpenGL 1.3 for "driving"

http://torcs.sourceforge.net/index.php? ... e&artid=30

Minimum: 550MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, OpenGL 1.3 compatible graphics card with 32 MB RAM.

The oldest version of that document on archive.org may indicate that TORCS 1.3.0 was the last Version that worked with OpenGL 1.2:

Quite surprisingly no one mentioned the real classic http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SGI_Dogfight, i think i spent many hours, days and nights flying above flat shaded grounds, quite rudimental, real retro slam back, but fun == endless.. any standard Irix instalation includes it, watch for the demos app group.

Then you have CertainImpact, WWII or I? planes simulation, it can be found on Indigo2 Impact demo cd. Find my channel on youtube, some time ago i did a short clip of it.

Then somewhere down the road i catched up also a F-18 demo, you could fly and fire rockets, but no cockpit view, only arcade - like outside view. Also had a clip of it, but can`t really remember where i digged the installation.

Then if memory serves me right i`m 99% sure i saw also A-10 flight sim on Irix running somewhere, some long time ago.

As for cars You have those boxed fun ones running as Inventor game demos :)

We (which is to say those of us at my place of employ) wrote a pretty cool simulator that began on IRIX and segued to Solaris and Linux (reverse evolution), it's an integrated evaluation and simulation system for ground combat vehicles.
