Hi Foetz.

Thanks for the StudioPaint screenshots!

I have only used Studio Tools briefly so I'm interested in hearing the texture painting workflow in StudioPaint. Did Alias StudioPaint use a single surface material with a shading switch node to seamlessly paint a texture across multiple NURBS patches?

pretty much yes. the alias shaders have an option "per object images" which is used by the sp export. there might be other ways but i'm not an sp guru so ... :P
if you wanna clearly handle patches individually you could of course transfer and paint them one by one.

Hey, AutoCAD 12 (and 13) even existed for IRIX :)

I thought Autocad was a pain in the ass until we switched to Pro/E, then I found out what a pain in the ass really is... :x

I used to think autocad was a pain in the ass, until I switched to Dassault DraftSite. Now I KNOW autocad is a pain in the ass :D

I've got Dassault Catia 5 (circa 1998) for IRIX on CD, I haven't tried installing it because I'm pretty sure there's no way in hell I'll ever be able to get it licensed.

hey now hey now hey now ! The Pro she be okay le ! They made the SGI Toaster with it, can't be all bad !

Wildfire is much more Windows-y and (hate to admit it) easier to use. Not so many Done. Done done done. Done done. Done. sequences :)

I actually had a Cadkey 6 for Solaris, but no Solaris to run it on. Wish I had it today :(

I have not tested that myself, but pretty much looks like another AutoCAD clone.

First AutoCAD version I tried was AutoCAD R13 and it really was painful to work with. Later in school there was AutoCAD 2000 and it really was much nicer to use, the snap facility particularly. Luckily we did most of the work with CADS, so did not have to use AutoCAD that much.

The easiest CAD I've ever used is TurboCAD, but it's Windows and Mac only. Apparently it doesn't work with Wine on Linux...

before this turns into a "which cad do you like best" thread, how about posting a few pics and some info about an old irix cad program?

You just mis-spent my afternoon :D This isn't a screenshot and it's on an HP workstation but uses the dials and buttons and a digitizer and the application was available for Irix. A demo is on the Hotmix 18 CD ... but not the demo itself, a link to the demo. I've been hunting for years for the Real Thing ... there's got to be one out there somewhere.

Still, it's vintage and that granite ball thingy floating in midair screams SGI :D

Yeah. Search for "Oakland Bay Bridge" and see what you come up with ... they built the Golden Gate bridge in under five years in the thirties with slide rules, but that was before the invention of the MBA.

yeah mental ray is better. i meant maya's default renderer. however mental ray is so slow so it's not a real option
