for the record, maya 6.5 is not vintage. with mental ray it has global illumination, ray traced soft shadows, final gathering and caustics. the only difference to todays renderers is that it's not physically based.
if you want the vintage look you have to renounce indirect illumination and also use shadow maps.

Sure, Maya 6.5 is not really vintage and it's the highend of 3D software of our SGI's last products.
I know that to obtain a vintage looks 3D images, I have to keep in mind to work with basic tools and basic render options ; and don't hesitate to use mpeg1 and upscaling with FFMpeg [^_^!]

hehe no problem. you can either use the toolchest link as mentioned by robespierre or run what the toolchest does manually:

Code: Select all

/usr/sbin/startconsole

alternatively you can start maya from a terminal. all output goes to that terminal then.

Here is the result of the render of this scene : 6'17" ; not so bad for a mono 400Mhz for this kind of scene.
Note : I've got a strange warning message in my console but I'll search an answer about it later.

Notice how your render appears darker when you look at it on a windows machine? I think it is due to the fact that SGI was viewing the color corrected sRGB or 2.2 gamma space as a default. I opened the image up on a windows photoshop and sure enough it looks gamma 1.0. So I sRGB corrected it a reposted it. Now it looks as is should in windows browsers but bright on SGI web browsers.

I am betting your render time is better than my o2. I'll run the same screen cap tonight and see what the frame time is in the console.

the irix default gamma is 1.7. however, if you have a vpro setting the gamma to the same value as windows has does still not make it look the same.

1.7... ah hah....

That would explain why cutting it by .4545 isn't making it the same as it usually does with 2.2.

Honestly surprised how far ahead of the gamma correction game SGI was. People in the industry outside of the SGI/mental ray/Renderman club had no idea what it was that made images seemed less clamped until they started talking about the "Vray" look" in 2004 due to the built in sRGB viewer in Vray.

Will have to look into the gamma or sRGB (more midrange curve) discrepancy.

--edit----

I think since I had the wrong value that the image I posted may be a little brighter than it should be overall then since I wasn't using 1.7 as a reference point in color correction.
