Here is typical example of raytraced image of that era. Took couple hours with Iyonix running Render Bender 2 under Aemulator. (Early Archimedes raytracer.)

Another one. This time with SolidsRENDER and this one only took 2h 59 minutes to finish.

Some of what you're seeing may be due to them being rendered to film (via film recorders) -- the analog response of film is very distinctive, and I personally like it very much!

I had the opportunity to buy a Polaroid slide recorder once, but I wasn't sure if it could be adapted to 4-perf cine format.

I recently scored a LaserGraphics 8k film recorder on ebay -- should be here in a few days. I can't wait to pipe some renderings into it to get that oldschool look :) Actually the reason I bought it is to experiment with getting an authentic film look with digital photos. I am/was a film snob, and hate how fake the typical Instagram-type filters look...
