using cloned disk on different processor

Unread postby jfeldt » Mon Apr 17, 2006 11:02 pm

Hi, I have been lurking for a while, and I love the site. Thanks for the all the help and info I have been finding. Recently I tried cloning the disk from an R10k O2 to a RM5200 O2. The OS is 6.5.29 on the 10k, and the previous OS on the 5k was 6.5.9. The system is much slower with the cloned 6.5.29 install. I went and disabled the same services, but... there is some kind of lag in interactivity. The console complains about the architecture changing. The framerate in Quake 2 is about the same between the 6.5.9 and 6.5.29 installs on the RM5200 machine. The disk went from a stock 4GB to a 10k RPM 9GB one, so that should have helped.

I know the R10000 and RM5200 are both MIPS IV, but is there some kind of optimization that IRIX does during the installation that I am missing out on by cloning between them (R10k does OOO, etc.)? Has anyone seen something like this before?

If there is no fix, then I will probably clone the 6.5.9 to the faster disk and then patch to 6.5.22, to get the Nekoware goods.

I did some testing with high versions of IRIX ( ~25, 27 ) and decided that they took O2 optimizations out, or added some non-O2 friendly stuff in later versions. I downgraded my R12k O2 to 6.5.22 and everything got speedy again, so not sure at which point the O2 bloat crept in, but 6.5.22 is fine and runs Nekoware.

Once you step up to the big iron, you learn all about physics, electrical standards, and first aid - usually all in the same day

That's very interesting. Thanks for sharing this. I will try running 6.5.22 instead and see what happens.
