So I bought an Altix 450...

Unread postby VolumetricSteve » Fri Dec 22, 2017 12:51 pm

I have a working Altix 450 that mostly passes its own memory test, reports 16 cpus and looks good up to the point of EFI.

Curiously, the only thing I seem to be able to get this system to boot from are the text-only portions of the SLES 10 Itanium edition discs I have. Gentoo doesn't even show up as an option, I haven't tried much else yet.

I have an ATI FireMV 2200 in there, but I have yet to see X working correctly, it seems like the normal SLES installer wigs out and I get garbage data on the screen whenever it tries to load up the graphical installer. Maybe a bad disc burn, maybe a bad 2200, hopefully not a bad Altix.

I would prefer it if Gentoo would work, the tools provided there are more useful to me and SLES is a huge pile of parts I'll spend a lot of time stripping down...but if I could just get a booting system that I could get GCC on, i'd be happy.

Any pointers or things I should look at to get it to boot Gentoo, or fix what I assume is a graphical issue with SLES?

Thanks for your help.

You might want to PM member smj and ask him to take a look at this, he's got an Altix 450 running SLES 11 SP1.

Also, you've probably already got this but the Altix 450 System User's Guide is available here:

I'd install SLES first and then build Gentoo in a chroot and then boot from the chroot install, when everything is good you can delete the SLES install if you want and grow the partition.

Yay, another A450! I haven't powered mine up in quite a while, unfortunately - I've got a boatload of 2GB DIMMs to install when I do set it up again.

I tried to pull together a lot of advice from others and my own findings on OSes for the Altix machines in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=16727812 . I guess I didn't create a hinv thread for my A450, but I describe the SLES + ProPack installation at the start of this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16728996&p=7372695

I never tried to get any graphics running with the A450, never wanted to try. I don't remember anything saying you definitely can't make it work, but I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions. You might want to check the OS thread above and others about graphics support for the Prism, which is an Altix 3k-family machine that shipped as a workstation. Maybe the supported OS options (SLES9) and ProPacks that worked for it would offer a better chance of success, if they work on Altix 4k and your choice of graphics card were compatible...

Can you let me know which manufacturers/part numbers of RAM you have in your blades? I haven't updated the Altix 4k RAM thread in a while... viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16728980
