Received an O2, now how do I get it to boot.

Unread postby jamvanderloeff » Sun Aug 27, 2017 4:56 pm

Hi,

I recently got hold of an O2 and am trying to figure out how to get it to boot properly. It turns on, chimes and I can use PROM, both over keyboard and video or via serial console, but whenever I go to Start System or Install System Software my monitor turns off or on serial I get "Starting up the system..." and then nothing more.

Running Diagnostics goes fine through the first few tests, but throws errors on scache6 test

Code: Select all

Interrupt:  IDE

vid 0, restart IDE
ide>> scache6
Error code = IP32.08.03.06.01, w1 = 81400000, w2 = 01480000
Error code = IP32.08.03.06.01, w1 = 81400004, w2 = 01480004
Error code = IP32.08.03.06.01, w1 = 81400008, w2 = 01480008
and so on.

This looks like an error in the L2 cache? I have tried reseating and cleaning contacts on the system boar to backplane, CPU daughterboard contacts, CPU LIF socket, with no change.

Am I doing something wrong with the software, or is it likely an actual hardware issue? If it is dead L2, would it be possible to disable it? (I could desolder the chips if necessary).

I see similar CPU daughterboards are pretty cheap on ebay, picking up a replacement is an option.

I do have what looks like a full set of IRIX CDs including base 6.5 and several overlay sets.

Code: Select all

I would be inclined to believe IDE that there is a secondary cache (L2) error. It might be caused by a shorted connection, like a wire strand or stray solder ball under a cache chip. Testing with another CPU module would be the logical next step.
