slow Octane interface speed

Unread postby gijoe77 » Sat Jan 21, 2017 2:03 am

I had an octane with a 1GigE card - I cloned the disk. It was *blazing* fast. easily > 10Mb/s
I put the cloned disk in another octane with a different 1GigE card - it runs painfully slow. ~ 200kb/s

ifconfig -va shows me its 1000Mb/s full-duplex. If I pop a different IRIX disk into the Octane I get really good network speeds - so the problem seems to be on the cloned disk.

I used system manager to config the interface to the proper hostname and IP/subnet. I can't seem to figure out why its running so slow - anyone have any ideas what I missed?

On the Octane with the slow eth speed there might be jumbo frames activated. This brings down an IRIX machine if the frame size differs inside the network.

There is a good chance that might be the case, let me do some digging

the original workstation had a eg0 interface, my current workstation has a tg1 interface. I checked for jumbo frames but it is not configured for either eg0 or tg1. I'm still digging but it sure is strange.

I also compared /etc/config/tgconfig.options on both disks - they are the same, and the TCP buffer sendspace is set to 256KB.

and that different disk is also a clone or has it been installed on this octane?

I did a clean install on the octane - that's the original disk - I get good network speeds when I use the native disk.

I got my hands on a discreet octane and I cloned that disk, when I put that cloned disk into my current octane its having a really hard time with speeds. I know some discreet installs do enable the jumbo frames so I was really hoping that was the case but it appears to not be enabled.

well, you said the network card is different. in what way? original sgi card? or different kernel module? or different hex patch?

I think they should all be original SGI cards. From my understanding the original discreet Octane had a SGI branded card that was using the eg0 driver, my current octane has a SGI branded card using the tg1 driver. I don't have access to the original discreet octane anymore.

i do believe the clone drive rebuilt/autoconfig'd at some point - I didn't use the network until a I swapped the original and clone a few times

okay that's an option. still strange tho, it's nothing else than replacing a network card which should of course work anyway.
maybe discreet added some custom stuff in that regard ...
