hello

Unread postby joshiggins » Sat Nov 19, 2016 4:30 pm

Hi everyone just picked up my first SGI, an Octane :Octane: from ebay here in the UK and wanted to register and say hello.

It's a 2x 225mhz r10k with 512mb memory and esi graphics. Nothing special I guess but unmolested nonetheless, running great but took me a while to get the 6.5.22 overlay installed to run some nekoware. There is a proxy in my office at the university, so the scripts for nekoware didn't work - I had to mirror everything using wget and share over NFS to the Octane. Please tell me if there is an easier way, or on the other hand, if another mirror would be useful :P

With it came free another "non working" Octane. Single CPU (unknown), no memory, same graphics. It powers on with flashing red light presumably because there is no memory, but with any luck it might be okay. Not very tempted to swap bits from the working one in case I break something though, those compression connectors are scary. I would be tempted to put two graphics in the working one for a dual head setup though, from what I read this should work.

Anyway, thanks for keeping such a great resource and so much information about these machines alive.

Greetings and welcome to the fold!

That's a great picture, two Octanes on their way to a happy new home...

We probably could use another mirror, my personal favorite mirror (reality.sgiweb.org, it was fast) has been down for months...
Project:
Temporarily lost at sea...
Plan:
World domination! Or something...

I have unlimited Internet with 20Mbps upload, a home server in a DMZ, and am located in Ottawa, Canada. Is this crappy compared to existing mirrors, or is it OK?

Welcome and welcome to the Octane owners club.

The compression connectors should be fine, just don't get them dirty and don't mess with the boards unless you have to. I only had one problem with the Octane 1 briefly refusing to recognize the graphics, but that was 2 years ago and has never happened since.

Now that the cold Canadian winter is here. I am running my Octane1 as a space heater and it's keeping my room nice and toasty.

Thanks everyone. I think I will try to put together another 13w3 adapter and make a dual head system, compression connector anxiety or no compression connector anxiety.

Haha car seats! I need the biggest car seat you have....

I've transported many things secured by my rear seat belt's.. and you cannot fit an Octane in 0-5 Car seat.

See another thread of mine regarding leaving an Origin 200 in the boot of your car... and then having someone drive into your car hard enough that they end up sitting next to you.. saying that.. Happy endings!

If you can find them closer to you, I find these 13W3 adapters with dip switches to be the most useful. They can be configured to work on a variety of systems.

Just taken an Octane from Huddersfield to Oxfotdshire, so good to hear there are some more in town! I still have a Fuel and I2 - did the 6.5.22 upgrade on the latter, ftp-ing the tardists from a linux box.

Welcome to nekochan btw, I've found members here really helpful.

Welcome! This is a fantastic picture. I have totally been there, many times with all the computers I've hauled home.

Now try hauling an Origin 2000 deskside in a Mark 4 Jetta :D

Wait a second, please tell me about this. I had a mk4 Jetta and I brought home a Origin 2000 deskside in the B7 Audi A4 that I replaced the Jetta with.

There was a small tear on the C pillar trim because my helper wasn't patient enough during unloading, but it worked. I don't know if it would have worked in a mk4 Jetta. I had to pull the skins off and pulled the PSU out, then put the module on the folded down rear seat. When I sold the Origin 2000 I delivered it to the new owner in a B7 A4 Avant without any drama.
