Can agree, Nekochan is usually very helpful and a good place to talk about SGI (or the other platforms it has boards for). Definately an excellent community.

I often see spare R5k CPUs on ebay.

I'd definitely change CPU for better response.

There is an R5k 300mhz cpu for $170 US right now.
