Pentium III ? IRIX ? Linux?

One of the above is the odd one out!

Did you mean, What version of Linux will run fine?

Anyway, guess based on PIII era.. Red Hat 6.x..

A BSD should work as well. 1200s are pretty much standard PCs with nVidia graphics, so anything that does x86PC SMP should be fine.

If you do Linux you should be able to run MAXX desktop for the SGI look.

Yes of course !!

Nvidia video into the 1200 ? not the habitual ATI rage as we find in every server ?

What about 3D performance on 1200 under Linux? I'm askin because even recent proprietary nVidia drivers do suck balls.

I thought they were all nVidia - I know the workstations that were not Cobalt all had nVidia graphics. Never worked with a 1200.

The SGI 1200 is just a boring PIII server as far as I can tell. Here's the datasheet: http://www.quentind.com/quantum/images/1200.pdf

I checking out photos on the Internet and I saw one at a recycler once. Never paid it much interest. I wouldn't be surprised if it sports a completely stock, off the shelf, Tyan or Intel motherboard.

Graphics? Unless you add something to one of the PCI slots, not even AGP, it'll be ATI or Matrox or similar simple server oriented get Windows/Linux installed type graphics.

Hello

in my case it's about an Intel mobo, two pentiumIII 550Mhz, 512Mb SDram

so when i receive it, it never turn on, maybe it do not like girls !!! anyway, the seller send me a PSU, a mobo and two cpu, pulled off from a tested one.

i have buyed a PCI nvidia TNT2 board to put in and get a better graphics than the Cirrus Logic GLD5480 onboard.

i'll put in 4 37Gb 15k drives , a DVD and a Suse linux.

cheers

I have seen these 1200 on leboncoin since a while.
Great PIII rigs.
For your mobo, it's probably bad caps or a smt fuse dead.
best regards.
