Monitor compatibility with VGA adaptor

Unread postby mrmookie » Tue Oct 28, 2014 7:01 am

This is a small part account of a larger effort to resurrect the INDY that came into my possession some 12 years ago.

Its been gathering dust in a box in the garage for that time, knowing that some day, I would.

I purchased the 13w3 to VGA adaptor online

After scrounging around I found a reasonably recent ASUS widescreen monitor that would actually show the desktop after booting.

Being a 16:9 wide screen the panel is not ideal for the Indy, and would not run happily at 1280x1024

Two other attempts with similar flat panels had "no Signal" errors.

After a bit more scrounging I happened upon the Phillips 190S (4:3, 0.289 dp, native resolution 1280x1024_60)

The specs say it will accept Syncs on Green, but with testing.... no. But I persisted.

This forum, the wiki and some other sources led me to thinking that the problem was mixed messages to the monitor, SOG and a separate H&Vsynch signal.

So (knowing that I have a large stock of old VGA cables) I broke off Pins 13 and 14. Yes Just them. (H sync, Vsynch) from one end of the VGA cable, and.... Voila, a beautiful crisp and full reso desktop.

Is that difficult? NO, the way they make cable pins these days, its hard not to break other pins unintentionally, so be careful. Fine screwdriver. Bend down, bend back, bend down, and crack.

Other parts of the story include sourcing the VGA adaptor, getting a new SCSI drive with IRIX etc.

Maybe later.
