Hello… I recently bought an SGI O2 (the model without the Hypercube logo)… It's missing the Top panel… as well as the plastic PSU cover…

Anyway… while carrying it, the disc tray slid out and wouldn't go back in… I did some research and read that I would have to disassemble the disc drive… I got to removing the skin, then the tray slid back in… So I put it back together… And plugged it in… The disc drive made a motor sound that stopped after awhile… pressing the Disc eject button caused the motor sound to start again… The tray also slid out whenever it was tipped over… I disassembled the computer, and then the Disc drive… while opening it, a small white gear fell out… I got the tray to stay inside the drive… Reassembled the computer… Plugged a monitor/keyboard/mouse in… Turned it on… And the motor noise started…

I reached the login screen, realized that the machine was password protected (why wouldn't it be… IRIX is a UNIX OS)… Tried typing "guest" as the username… It logged me in… Searched around… Couldn't find the "inject" command…

I'd like to reset the password… But I can't because of the disc drive…

But it's hard to do surgery without images… Again… Where is this "inject" command?

Welcome to nekochan!

This might be too old, but take a look at this page. However I expect IRIX 6.5.x will ask for the root password to enter single user. (checking now... yes, and I doubt the minor version of IRIX matters for this.)

There are other options if you have bootable IRIX media, or another IRIX box, or a Linux system that can mount SCSI drives and has the xfs filesystem bits. You can find some additional information about these methods on this wiki page.

If you have an external SCSI CD-ROM drive you could go that route, but I'm guessing you knew that and don't have one...

Thanks! I'll try these when I have the time… Would a Centris 650 running A/UX count as a Linux system?… Also… Is it normal for the monitor to have a greenish hue?

No. You need an O/S with an XFS filesystem driver, Linux, or IRIX. Possibly FreeBSD with XFS support.

Green is not normal, Sync-On-Green compatibilty in the monitor is required.

The cog falling out is normal... happens to a lot of O2s including one of mine. Replace the drive or do the surgery.
An external SCSI drive will work for booting off for passwd removal.

No. IRIX uses the XFS filesystem. XFS was introduced into Linux late in the 2.4 kernel timeframe, so any relatively recent Linux distro might have the bits. FreeBSD may have read-only or read-write capabilities, however I'm not aware that anybody's used it for this purpose. The forum search function may be helpful in this case.

I'm using a Daytek (with this "matrox" logo) monitor… Starts solid green, then the GUI appears, in colour… Not exactly a high-quality monitor… I have several Mac monitors… But only 1 VGA monitor…

Anyways… Where does the White gear go? In the drive, I mean…

Pull the top of the drive off and move the tray in and out with your hand, you should see a spindle which goes over a cog which looks it should match the moving part.. Move the tray in and out while looking at the moving parts and ask yourself "where would it make sense for it slide back onto.." .. You should see it top right looking from the front from memory of a few years ago... Slide it onto the moving rail and add a small dob of glue.

Take photos and add it to the wiki if you feel inclided.. Its a common problem for O2s.

If you can login as guest then another way to retrieve your root password is to grab the encrypted version of the root password and run it through something like "John the Ripper password cracker".

Just create a one line file (e.g. passwd.txt) using the Irix root password entry from '/etc/passwd' in a text file as follows:

root:H6adwKXXbVszw:0:0:Super-User:/:/bin/tcsh


Then at the Dos prompt command line in XP simply run "john passwd.txt"

Have done this myself and it works quickly...

If nothing else you can open up the raw device with a hex editor, search for the root string from either password or shadow, and replace it with a known hash from another UNIX box. I've done this with DOMAIN/os when nothing else worked, and it was much faster than John (though this was many years ago).

I've never had that much success with John The Ripper but I am sure other people do. I've found it easier to put the root disk as a 2nd drive in another SGI or clone a root disk, such as on the Tezros.

Interesting SAQ, I didn't know that the hash from different O/S would map to the same passwords, you learn something everyday. You would expect the slightest variation in the algorithm or different seed values or something would change it.

Fixed the disc drive… But, I don't have any IRIX discs… Or Linux machines… Or any other SGI machines… I read that you could change the passwords with the help of IRIX's "security vulnerabilities"… How do you go about doing that?

I developed a technique for changing the root passwd from the boot environment, as long as stand/fx is installed.
It's described here.
