I have two 36GB drives from an old Windows box in my Fuel. I boot up to the PROM and type HINV and I get:

Code:
Internal SCSI Controller 0: Version Qlogic 12160
Disk Drive: unit 2 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,2,0))
Disk Drive: unit 3 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,3,0))
Disk Drive: unit 4 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,4,0))
Disk Drive: unit 5 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,5,0))
Disk Drive: unit 6 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,6,0))
Disk Drive: unit 7 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,7,0))
Disk Drive: unit 8 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,8,0))
Disk Drive: unit 9 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,9,0))
Disk Drive: unit 10 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,10,0))
Disk Drive: unit 11 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,11,0))
Disk Drive: unit 12 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,12,0))
Disk Drive: unit 13 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,13,0))
Disk Drive: unit 14 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,14,0))
Disk Drive: unit 15 on SCSI Controller 0, (dksc(0,15,0))
Integral SCSI controller 1: Version Qlogic 12160
CDROM: unit 6 on SCSI Controller 1, (cdrom(1,6,7))

How can I make this one partition for the hard drive? I have tried to boot off of my 6.5.29 CD 1 and from my 6.5 Foundation CD 1. II have searched here and the internet and nothing seems to work for me. You help is most appreciated!

Thank you!

Fred

You have a SCSI ID conflict.

Change the jumpers on one or both of the drives so that the SCSI ID is something other than zero. If your drives are the boot and first option drive, use ID 1 for the boot and ID 2 for the option drive. The SCSI boot drive in a PC/Windows system typically uses SCSI ID 0 and the SCSI controller uses ID 7, in the SGI/IRIX world the boot drive typically uses ID 1 and host bus controller uses 0.

If it isn't printed on the drive label, you can Google the model numbers of the drives to obtain a manual with jumper positions.

Once you have that sorted out you can use the wiki or Ian's installation guide to prepare the drives and install IRIX.

Thank you Recondas! I will change the SCSI ID's this evening and start again with the install. I will google the drives to get accurate information.

I changed the ID's and ran the FX command and both drives are partitioned and labeled. I am following Ian's guide for the OS install.

Thanks again Recondas!

Last night I installed 6.5 and it came up to the Iris login prompt. I logged in and only saw the console window. Is that correct? No other windows or menus. When I left-click, I get logout only.

Any insight on if I installed it correctly? This is on my Fuel.

Thank you!

Which revision of IRIX 6.5 (and which CDs are included in your install set)?

That should be everything needed. You're not by chance booting from the PROM with the command "single" are you?

Run the command "chkconfig" in the (root) console window and check to see of the desktop is configured on (if not, execute "chkconfig desktop on" and reboot).

I will try this tonight when I get home. I know when I first tried the install and began with scanning the IRIX 6.5.29 overlays, I received a lot of conflicts.

To answer your question, I am not using "single".

I will post after I have tried this.

Thank you!

Therein might lay the larger issue. Which conflicts and how did you resolve them?

The conflicts regarding Netscape wanting certain bits of the equally ancient SGI freeware installed usually appear and can be resolved by completely opting out of the installation of Netscape.

As simple as resolving the Netscape issue is, using the "Do not install" option for other conflicts can be problematic (or even fatal). Conflicts related to most core hardware and software can usually be resolved by opening another CD. Installing from all the CDs in a base CD set *and* a later revision Overlay set may require the selection of libraries meeting the requirements of hardware not supported in the base install set.

If your 6.5.29 overlays are bootable I'd recommend leaving out the IRIX 6.5.0/June 1998 Installation Tools Disks during an initial install.

I will try this then. When I get an option to resolve a conflict, it asks me if I want to provide the necessary CD or not to install the software causing the conflict.

I was looking for a guide really that explained how to install 6.5.29 from scratch. I found a 6.5.28 guide from SGI Tech Pubs, but am weary as I know the Fuel does not support anything less than 6.5.17.

Thanks again Recondas!

It's hard to beat either of the following when it comes to installing or customizing IRIX:
http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/6.5inst.html
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/ ... tomization

You might find making an install from the PROM is easier to manage if you use only the CDs necessary to get a minimal working install (after IRIX is up and running you can add the other as needed from within IRIX). See the "Reading the CDs" portion of Ian's "Installing IRIX 6.5" guide for details.

When using the "Installation and Customization" wiki article, be sure to replace the example used for sysid ("fuel"), the default IP address ("192.168.178.14 fuel.home.local fuel") and other example IP addresses with those appropriate for your system and network.

I have successfully installed IRIX 6.5.29m onto my Fuel. I want to thank Recondas so very much for all his assistance with this this. I will post images of my Fuel today.

Thank you!

I now have an issue getting the Fuel online. I have gone over the two links Recondas provided and I have edited the appropriate files. I have even gone through and used the System Manager way of configuring and still no go. I am now getting a TCP error unreachable. I will continue to troubleshoot, just wondering if there is an easier way to get this online.
