Okay, so I got myself a copy of IRIX 6.5… I booted up the O2, clicked "stop for maintenance" Clicked through the install buttons… And the Miniroot installed… As soon as it finished installing, the monitor went blank and turned off because of the lack of video signal… Meanwhile the O2 just sat there making it's fan noise…

That can happen if the installation kernel doesn't support the machine configuration. RM7000 processors require 6.5.12 or later, for example.

Yes, the 350 MHz O2 is an RM7000.

Irix 6.3 was the first release for (and only for) O2. It is mostly like Irix 6.2 but with a new Video Library for the O2's A/V features.

Unless you need 6.3 for a known reason (Ian has some posted if I recall), you're much better off with 6.5 (unless you have a base-level entry workstation from 1997). 6.5 complies with the newer UNIX standards and has much newer security/operational patches available. Building software on it is much easier as well.

Now that I have all the passwords and the disc drive sorted out...
How would I move files from the SGI to my computer and vice versa?
Would it be possible mount the SGI hard disk in Mac OS X?

I suggest using FTP or (for added flavor) NFS. FTP is relatively simple, and you can mount FTP servers in the OSX Finder.

IRIX will read and write some FAT formats for floppies, some older HFS formats for floppies, XFS, EFS and RockRidge.
Macintosh will r/w FAT, HFS, UFS, but doesn't do such a good job for floppies anymore.
Linux will r/w XFSv2 (IRIX 6.5.6+), read EFS, and read/write all HFS and FAT.

Your best and easiest approach is to go over the network.

The reason is I've run 6.5 on about everything, thought it would be fun to run something different for a change. But if 6.3 won't work with an RM-7000 then I'm kinda screwed for that project

The suggestion to use FTP is a good one, there are some opensource ftp applications available as pre-compiled IRIX binaries in nekoware: http://nekoware.dustytech.net/index.php?path=current/

Depending on how the IRIX installation was originally done on your O2, you may have a *very* basic method of outbound file sharing already installed. IRIX installations include a very rudimentary web server by default. If it is installed (and not blocked or reconfigured) you can right click on any file or directory in your user account and select "Publish to Outbox..." from the drop-down menu to make the file or directory available in your O2's personal web site. The default web server used is old enough to be riddled with insecurities, but is probably safe enough for use in a reasonably well protected private network.

If it is installed and running you should be able to access the page from other systems on the same network by using the O2's IP address as a URL. Files or directories published to the outbox (with a right click) will appear in the "Outbox" page, the "Info" page will present your O2's hinv, and if you have an O2 Cam connected, the "Camera" page will publish a shot from the O2 Cam.

All in all it's charming piece of SGI history to play with, but not a tool for serious file transfers. If your needs come to that go with one of the other methods mentioned.

If you have an ftp server on the Mac, another way is to open an Irix file window (that must have a better name, sorry) and type < ftp://your_Mac's_ip > where the path normally goes. It will pop up a username and password dialog box, then you can ftp directly from the desktop by drag-n-drop.

This method can be flaky tho, so a real ftp client is probably better. Still, it's a fun thing to play with. It may crash your desktop, occasionally it screws mine up but you can't really hurt anything, it's only a computer.
