Things to buy....

Unread postby uunix » Wed Jan 17, 2018 1:37 pm

OK, similar to the most wanted prized possession of ultimate computer thread but not so.. since the idea is to spend hours browsing ebay and think.. hey I want one.. So you then edit your post.. Ah but you say.. also similar to the wanted board.. but NO.. this is a editable list of just shite you want, and very doubtful anyone is going to take it serious.. but also, you can change your mind and wonder 'what the heck was I drinking that night to want that'..
[EDIT] Additional.. got-ta be stuff you have no need for, will only use a few times (like the Phillips G7000 me and the kids played with for about an hour) and maybe stuff you can't justify to your other half.! (If you have one.. otherwise your conscience).

SO Today I want a

Commodore CDTV.. never had one, and I want to play Kick Off which I played on the Atari ST but it was superior on the Commodore.

An IBM z Mainframe. I would have little practical use for it but the design is sexy and I would probably have people wanting to rent time on it.

I am probably posting from yangxiaolong, HP Z230 with Xeon E3-1230v3, 16GB RAM, GeForce 750ti, and running NetBSD and Windows 8.1 Embedded.

Certainly rent a bit of time and run the old Lotto predicting computation program on it.

Even with their flaws I still want a SGI Fuel...

And an Amiga 3000. And an Amiga CD32 too.

If space was no option, I'd probably buy an Amiga 1200, an Archimedes of some sort (used loads when I was at school), a BBC Model B, and a ZX80 (my dad nearly acquired one ages ago from work, but they got binned - a pity as they're worth a bit now).

Moving into fantasy land, I'd love to find a new laptop with a decent keyboard, decent trackpad and decent screen. But like I say, this is more fantasy than anything else as no company has made such a thing for quite a few years now unfortunately. I'd also love to find a 4k monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio (3840x2400 resolution), but again nobody makes such a monitor at the moment.
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

If you don't mind old, you can join the club of the T221 lovers. =)
The thing is a delight to own, operate and look at. Besides the rather high black levels and slow screen refresh, it's the most beautiful screen I've ever seen.

I had an alert set on eBay for it, there were two available last year. One went for too much money, but I think I got mine for the right price.

Nice! The only issue I have with it is the size as I'm currently using a 28" screen - not sure if I could drop to 22".

I did actually find one, the Canon DP-V3010: https://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/produc ... /dp-v3010/

30", 4096x2560 resolution. Downsides? Well, it's £25,000 which is a bit steep :)

At some point, when I can factor it in, I would like to get my hands on one of these:

It's certainly not something that I would have an everyday practical use for, but it sure would come in handy in order to carry out proper SMT repairs on my ageing fleet of systems.

I want a KGPE-D16 based Qubes+Libreboot workstation. The reason I specify KGPE-D16 w/ Libreboot over the Raptor Talos II is because of the Qubes OS support. I really like my Librebooted T400, and just recently I released a script to make Qubes on Libreboot a lot easier (http://dodoid.net/qubreboot). I can imagine Qubes doing quite well with such a powerful system. Hmm, I might have to go look at eBay now :) ...

I've been disappointed by my WX1 that I've had for 3 years now, wish I had kept my WES51 when I upgraded but I gave it to a friend. The WXMP iron is great in addition to the regular 65 watt it came with. But it is super complicated to use to the point where I had to ask support to figure out how to turn the damn thing off (hold down both temp preset buttons for a few seconds). The connector where the iron plugs into the base is super chintzy. The whole thing feels poorly designed and constructed (well it does say "made in germany" right on the front, what can you expect?) The base station weighs five gazillion pounds for some reason.

I paid for an upgrade but I feel like it was a very expensive "side-grade" there is no overshoot on the WXMP and the iron itself is a lot lighter but it overall wasn't worth the price. Just because the WES51 is so good.

Meanwhile my cheesy-ass 852D+ hot air station from aliexpress (mine has the pump in the base) is on it's 3rd heating element but otherwise still working great.

Normally things made in Germany are pretty solidly designed and built. Guess you've found an exception!

It's the "Made in Britain" sign that should set off the alarm bells:
