Vintage Computer Festival August 5 and 6

Unread postby ClassicHasClass » Fri Jul 28, 2017 9:09 am

VCF is back at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View on August 5 and 6. I'll be demonstrating the Apple Network Server 500 with some client machines and the cleaned up Shiner prototype. I'll also be cutting loose a few more items on the consignment table. Haven't decided yet.

Last year commodorejohn was there and we hung out and that was cool, but this year there had better be a better turnout than just us. (Ahem, smj and other semi-locals.)
smit happens.

I'm certainly hoping to go, if I can get permission. Probably won't make it until Sunday though, my company is having a big event Saturday.

That's two!

I've decided I'm going to put the two Google Search Appliances I have rotting in storage on the block, and one of the Solbourne systems.

I've decided the lineup. Besides the ANS 500 (as the centerpiece) and the Shiner HE prototype, the client machines will be two PowerBook 2300c systems and an Outbound notebook (the 68030 version). One of the 2300 systems will be connected over Ethernet and run the Mandelbrot Fractal demo (the ANS computes the set and pushes it to the client), and the other two will be connected with LocalTalk as terminals over ADSP.

Be there or be less nerdy than I am.

Might be fun to come see, but it's really quite far away.

As reported, got to meet smj and japes and ran into classichasclass again. Also played a bunch of old Japanese home computer games, picked up a breadbin C64 (I have my 128D, but I've been wanting something with a 6581 again,) an HP Visualize C200, and an OpenGL reference book, and finally caught the PDP-1 demo at the CHM. Good day :)

Also, new goal: gonna try to host an exhibit next year. Still pondering exactly what, but I've got some ideas.

Yes, a good time was had. There seemed to be several folks from the SeaTac area, and plenty who are familiar with trinitron's relentless hunger to possess all things Symbolics that still exist in the world... Thought of pentium when I saw the X68000. The restored Xerox Alto from Y Combinator was there and running. Lovely demo of a Tek 4051 vector graphics terminal, next to a Lisa running LisaOS.

Some guys had taken the source for the old SGI ButtonFly demos, built an IRIS GL -> OpenGL shim, and compiled them to run on an ARM tablet. Odd to see classic SGI demos running so nicely on a handheld - with a Personal IRIS 4D/30 sitting next to them, not doing much... No flight/dog, though.

Unfortunately the 90s DEC and HP workstations I brought for the consignment room don't seem to be selling... (Only asking a $5 donation to VCFed each, for providing the space, etc.)

I think the IRIS was running the large display, but I could be mistaken.

Yes, the Personal Iris is running the large display. The tablets have their own little LCDs.

Hap has his Apple prototypes today, including his famous dual G4 PowerBook (it boots!).

Personal Iris was cool to see. The SGI demos running on ARM boards with accelerators was worth the entire trip to the show. Their project page is on github, http://lkesteloot.github.io/alice/alice4/ .

I almost bought those DEC and HP workstations. But my wife is already upset that I am filling up our tiny bay area apartment with old SGI equipment. I need to be careful how much stuff I bring home at any one time.
