Does anybody use UDO disks? (Ultra Density Optical)

Unread postby Y888099 » Sun Mar 12, 2017 3:25 am

Some of my customers are terrible.
They want DVD-RAM disks. Ok. No problem!
They want MO disks. Magneto Optical drives are More expensive and hard to find. But OK, here we are.
The last request ... well it makes me wonder WTF is UDO?!?

Have you ever heard? used? I'm doomed ...

Yeah, those UDO systems use a blue-violet laser operating at a wavelength of 405 nm, similar to the one used in Blu-ray disk, but UDO cartridges look more based on an enhanced version of Magneto-optical disks (whose wavelength is 660 hm, red laser) using Phase Change technology combined with a blue violet laser.

Capacity: 30GB with UDO1, 60GB with UDO2, designed for a 50+ year life minimizing data movement frequency, virtually eliminating media maintenance, and lowering costs

A (RW) cartridge costs 30..50 euro, USO1-30GB/30euro, UDO2-60GB/50euro
A UDO1,2 driver costs … 1..2K euro
