All the stuff

Unread postby MrBill » Tue Feb 07, 2017 6:57 pm

Had a crate delivered to my shop. crimson, oyx2 and onyx2 without skins. Many related boards. still cataloging it all.

Also i think i found the maximum capacity of a 2003 saturn car.

Still figuring everything out, a lot to catalog. not sure what half of it is, not getting any sleep tonight.

To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. (IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report)

It was all bought from another nekochan member. I had to have a crate constructed to get it all shipped, i did not want any chance of anything getting damaged. Tons of spare boards, i am not even sure what all of them are. One of the machines is in a rackmount config, but did come with skins to make it into a deskside. It appears to have more options installed, but I have not gotten to starting that one up yet.

Might be time i finally crack and go through the trouble of setting up a network install server.

Yeah, i was happy to finally get one of these that works. How does installation of irix 6.2 go? Is there a similar set of cd's compared to irix 6.5? (overlays 1-4, applications, foundations 1-2)

The new crimson did not come with any hard drives, and sadly the original mammoth scsi drives from my other crimson are failing, so i need to do a fresh install of irix 6.2 for the first time.

At the very least you're going to need:

Code: Select all

812-0469-001 IRIX 6.2 (Part 1 of 2)
812-0470-001 IRIX 6.2 (Part 2 of 2)

Those contain the OS. With those installed your system will run. Usually you'll want an IRIX 6.2 Applications CD (812-0542-00x) and maybe NFS (812-0305-006) too.

You'll almost certainly want to patch things up a bit. I keep the patches on my FTP server. For IRIX 6.2 that's a 3 step process:
1. Apply POSIX patches -- IRIX 6.2 was shipped without pthreads support ftp://ftp.jurassic.nl/pub/irix/patches/ ... 6.2_POSIX/
2. Apply relevant Recommended/Required patch set. ftp://ftp.jurassic.nl/pub/irix/patches/ ... 2_crimson/
3. Apply Y2K patches. Crimson isn't Y2K proof so there was no Y2K patch set. But many of the patches under ftp://ftp.jurassic.nl/pub/irix/patches/ ... ch_suites/ apply regardless.

If you want compilers: there's the IRIS Development Option 6.2 (812-0470-001), but if you want something newer MIPSpro up to v7.3 will work on IRIX 6.2. MIPSpro had OS dependent Development Foundation and Development Libraries discs, so you'd need the IRIX 6.2 versions of those. I think I've got MIPSpro v7.2.1 on mine, which was a lot lighter than v7.3. Overlays are a 6.5 thing so e.g. the v7.3.1.3m overlay doesn't apply. You need patches.

You've got a Reality Engine there, right? First of all: congrats :) Let's hope there's not too many pinstripes of death in there. Try to leave the RE boards in the system unless you've got a pressing reason to remove them, they are extremely sensitive to mechanical stress. And check the fantray, the fans are not monitored!

Important: there was a bug in the RE textport PROM flash image as shipped with IRIX 6.2. It's been a couple of years, but IIRC you'll loose the textport graphical console window during or after the installation. Which kinda sucks if that's what you're using for the installation. X11 should work, but only if it boots that far of course. So use the serial console, disconnect keyboard and mouse to force console to serial #1. One of the recommended/required patches mentioned above fixes this. Serial pinout of 4D series is different from PCs or other SGIs, but if this is Crimson #2 you probably have got a cable.

Oh, and don't forget you'll need a "512 byte per block" CDROM drive to boot from. The older 4D series required CDROM drives with special firmware.
