Yeah, I wanted to choose something off the beaten path. Lots of people use Dells and HPs but you don't see people rebuild an eMachines.

It's gonna be a while but this thing will eventually get a nice IVB Core i5 setup with a little GPU.

I have a Haswell Z230 HP that is being transformed into a battlestation and a half. But the result will probably be not a sleeper but rather just unassuming.

Heh, all the computers in the computer science building at the college I go to are Z230 SFFs with i5-4570s and 12GB of RAM.

And here the only machine I own with more than 4GB RAM is my Sun Blade 2000 that isn't even being used for anything at the moment...

Well John I guess it depends on what you do with it.

In my case I really kinda need more RAM than 4GB for a lot of things.

True enough. Though for my purposes, if it wasn't for the bulk/bloat of modern web design and browsers, I doubt I'd even need 4GB...

You only need as much RAM as a system actually uses, any more is simply a waste of money! (no benefit at all)

There is nothing worse than looking at unused system resources that you've paid good money for! (Having 24GB of ram in a system that only uses 8GB max, for example, the extra 16GB is simply wasted money!)

I have personally made this mistake before and have learned from it. (won't happen again)

You need to think wisely when putting a system together.

As the Z230 is eventually destined to run Xen and will have both Windows 8.1 Embedded and NetBSD as guest domains, and its duties include a wide variety of tasks that require a lot of RAM I'm going to eventually max it out as I maxed out the W530 and used that RAM often

If your system can make use of all the RAM then it makes perfect sense.

The funny thing with RAM is that surplus RAM doesn't enhance system performance at all, but be short by 1MB and and your system performance will drop off dramatically .

Rather have more than I need then less, IMHO.

Agreed, it's important to future-proof your system. (doing it wisely though)

For instance, people always seem to talk about CPU's and RAM but the piece of hardware which usually lets most systems down the most is the HDD. (the slowest piece of hardware in most systems by far)

Therefore, rather than maxing out the RAM in a system, it might be a good idea to rather spend the money that you would have spent on RAM on an enterprise grade PCI-Express SSD for example. (makes a huge difference even in older systems, and these can be picked up on eBay nowadays for very reasonable prices.)

I've scored a dual 1.25 MDD with 2MB of cache and Verax fans.
They are so incredibly quiet. I'm going to get rid of the dual 867 I have.
