I must be a minimalist...

Unread postby guardian452 » Mon Oct 17, 2011 5:41 am

I enjoy getting rid of things as much as (if not more) getting new things.

Yesterday, I got rid of my TV and rack full of useless video and stereo equipment. All that is left is an amplifier and pair of speakers.

Gone are: cd player, equalizer, tape player, VCR, playstation, playstation2, DTV tuner, TV, rabbit ears, mixer, subwoofer, and power conditioner. Of course, the rack itself along with a half dozen knick knacks, a couple storage bins full of junk, and the spaghetti of cables also disappeared.

None of these things had been used in over a year. I just plug my computer into the amplifier with an extension cord to the headphone jack.

The whitespace is very liberating.

for now, all these things are in the garage. I'll try craigslist first, and then goodwill. most of the stuff I had bought used anyways so it was not a big investment.

I noticed that the electric socket faceplate is missing. that was not something I got rid of but was missing for as long as I can remember. I'll have to get a new one at some point.

Get an airport express and forget about cabling your laptop to the speakers.

Airport express will be a nice add on to the take aways.

I see no need for an airport, my computer is sitting on the corner of my desk visible in the top of that photo. it's a short extension cord that works fine. It seems very un-zen to replace a good working 15 foot cable with an expensive and complex wireless radio. While it is doubtful I would notice a difference I don't think the sound quality is as good. Software support and reliability can't be beat with a simple cable. If I had to run a cable any lengthy distance or through a different room I would get the airport.

I considered keeping my smaller speakers instead. but that would require a shelf to sit them on, so the net result would be worse (more stuff). I also considered getting rid of the speakers completely and using my clock radio, boom box, or silence. but I really enjoy dancing and singing (and just listening sometimes) to loud music.

looks good, but I also enjoy handling LPs and CDs and not using a PC when I want to listen to music.
It is just different to stand in front of the shelves and hand pick what I want to enjoy.

May be old news (I think I posted somewhere else when I got the turntable) but I have a TV again.

Last month, I moved out of my parents house so I have all my electronic gizmos on one shelf in the living room. Yes, I've set-up my PC with a program to act like an airport express (airplay target), it has WMC and video games too. (and the equalizer keeps the neighbours from complaining ;) )

Oh, and don't mind my secondhand-student-furniture (which is actually quite comfortable, thank you very much) but check out my cool onyx table! (it survived the move to the 3rd floor, I couldn't bear to part with it!)

(I'm really posting these here because I can't add attachments to PMs)

Nice Onyx end-table. And I dig the purple led accent lights on the book case.
