Re: Smallest SGI workstation

I sincerely hope that BSD does not get deep sixed, but I'm not counting on it. The second the Apple-zealots and Loonix-loonies hit FreeBSD with enough force, I'll fork FreeBSD I'll definitely be switching to that fork if that happens. FreeBSD is a diamond in the rough, infact I'm posting from it ri...

Re: Smallest SGI workstation

Want nothing to do with loonix anymore(Lol) myself, I put up with it for a few years but it was like eating something half cooked, not great. I'd be afraid of someone open sourcing IRIX, because there's a good chance someone would decide to mess that up too. The frustration with the increasingly ble...

Frontplane NIC diagnostic failed.

I guess this message intermittently with my Octane,

"Frontplane NIC diagnostic failed". Am I correct in assuming that refers to the number in a can module? If I bypass the error message the system boots fine.

Assuming that's the case where would I go about finding another number in a can?

Re: Octane: no LED

Today my Octane decided to refuse to POST again, telling me that the frontplane board needed to be "replaced", except that this time the error was persistent. Also I was getting intermittent errors about the SCSI backplane missing. So I looked at the Xbow router lights, all were on, so I t...

Re: Just got my first SGI machine. Requesting help with IRIX

I also just won an Octane off fleabay, in good cosmetic condition and reasonable specs. :) Reasonable specs are a question of taste, some people consider a 195MHz Octane with 512 meg RAM to be reasonable, which I find to be in extremely poor taste... ;) Reasonable is also relative to your goals wit...

Yeah, but her new stuff doesn't have any of the charm. ;)

Re: Octane: no LED

You probably touched the compression connector and cocked it up, either follow the instructions in the owners manual to clean it, or buy a replacement board.

Re: W T M F H.. ban people from your office!

I quietly dragged it into the house and down into the basement, where I unpacked it. Then when everyone went to bed I lugged up to the lair with the other computers. So far no one's noticed. But! Were you wearing a ninja outfit when you did all this? Nope, I had my nonchalant camouflage. ...

Re: Octane: no LED

Took the boards out of mine out of curiosity a couple of times. The Octane has only failed to boot once, said frontplane failed diagonistic, but was fine when turned on again.

Kinda makes me afraid to take an air compressor to it, for fear of messing up the connectors.

Got complaints when the O2 showed up, so when I won the Octane I was immediately waiting to intercept the package and I quietly dragged it into the house and down into the basement, where I unpacked it. Re: Silencing an O2 using a Noctua NF-R8-1800 as PSU fan

Just replaced the O2 fan with the Noctua. Is there anything further I need to do? Though it seems to be running ok.

Did you adjust any of the potentiometers to increase the fan speed and if so how?
