Re: Origin 200 used as render nodes?

Wow, just randomly today looking at old information stumbled upon an article which has a photo of a 1000 render node farm at PDI/Dreamworks in 2001 and lo a behold.... the nodes are all SGI Origin 200. http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/4803 That must have been a million dollars+ of Origin 200. JE...

Re: If SGI announced a non-x86 graphics workstation similar to their 90s machines today, would you buy it?

If it were still under the old SGI flag, yes probably. I would rather have a real system designed for performance than X86 commodity hardware. The problem lies in SGI itself. I don't think it would "feel" like a real SGI machine. The new SGI is just made to look like the old SGI. The same...

Re: If SGI announced a non-x86 graphics workstation similar to their 90s machines today, would you buy it?

I seem to recall that years ago someone here made a post talking about how they had saved up for an O2 and he went to SGI, was rather warmingly welcomed considering he was walking in off the street to buy a machine. They gave him coffee and doughnuts and a small tour and when they finally sat down ...

Re: How do you get your SGI machines?

Ebay. SGI O2 - came from some guy in Saskatchewan who used it as his workstation at home. It appeared to be in his basement in the pictures. SGI Octane - Came from some IT recycling company in Washington state. No idea what it's purpose was. SGI Octane2 - Came from Surrey, British Columbia. It was ...

Re: How do you get your SGI machines?

Could they be crossbred? Ack! My Sun Blade 2500 and my Tezro are sitting on the same desk, I'd better separate them, if they crossbreed the Universe could implode! Even today, that kind of behavior is illegal in some jurisdictions! If it has the potential to cause universe implosion, thos...

Re: How do you get your SGI machines?

I got my machines from a friend of mine who worked at SGI France for a long time. He still had friends over there and one day, they decided to scrap a whole lot of things. Before eveything got to the scrapyard, we got there in the parking lot with his station wagon and made a few trips to bring bac...

How do you get your SGI machines?

I will soon be picking up a load of Octanes, Indys, an O2 and an Indigo, along with some accessories from a guy who seems to be selling off his collection. This will be my first SGI stuff, and it's certainly a lot more than most people start off with, but there are a few other systems I might eventu...

...a Raptor TALOS, if that gets off the ground. https://www.raptorengineering.com/TALOS/prerelease.php Haven't heard of that, interesting project. I hope if it succeeds they lower the price after a while or release a cheaper version, that price is a bit hard to stomach as it is but if it were somew...

Re: Funny scammer phone call

Someday I want to run a Windows VM with black desktop background, hidden taskbar, and a VNC connection to an Octane or something. When scammers call, I will open teamviewer so they are controlling the VM and then quickly alt tab to the VNC client. Watch as scammer tries to figure out IRIX.

Re: If SGI announced a non-x86 graphics workstation similar to their 90s machines today, would you buy it?

That doesn't sound very 90s at all. Back then, MIPS was a pretty decent competitor for x86. And SGI had some really bitchin' graphics hardware on top of that. The combination of a powerful CPU and a powerful GPU is what made those machines shine. What you're suggesting sounds like some sort of spec...
