Re: HP(e) buys SGI for US$275MM

[...] I do agree modern computing is rather boring. You don't see the groundbreaking innovations anymore. It seems the days of expensive, exotic systems, with groundbreaking and mind blowing performance - have come to an end [...] I agree with what you have observed, but I think the homogenization ...

If you want to try a different board, some of them support power over ethernet, which is probably nicer?

If you can find them closer to you, I find these 13W3 adapters with dip switches to be the most useful. They can be configured to work on a variety of systems.

Re: Turning your back on windows

For me the divide is not only modern desktop OS (Windows 10, OS X 10.11/10.12) vs. older style OSes (BSD, commercial UNIX, VMS), but also modern Internet vs. old Internet. Much of what people participate in today (from digital software distribution, to streaming video, to even image and JavaScript l...

Re: how things should be shipped properly

One time though, the oddball in a million, someone sent me an O2 packed in such a manner (the box was actually too small, the top was bulging upwards), yet it survived the journey completely intact. Amazing! One of mine came well packed but started to fall apart the moment I pulled the bubble wrap ...

Re: how things should be shipped properly

As somebody who ships heavy failed (for return) auto parts regularly, yes, we do just wrap 200# transmissions in plastic and send them through fedex. Your delicate flower is not my problem. Amazingly this was how I received my Indy from an eBay seller. The packing consisted of cutting up ...

New Tru64 media

I came across this on eBay and ordered one for myself: http://www.ebay.com/itm/350722713534 It has new in box Tru64 3.2 / 4.0. It was fun seeing the DECUS membership pamphlet inside and stuff like "send in this card for a free Digital UNIX T-shirt." I don't know how rare (or not) these are...
