Re: [EBAY] Weird Indigo Thing

It is the breakout box for the multiple channel option for MGRAS (Indigo2 Impact or Octane), called the ICO (Impact Channel Option). It allows 4 graphics channels from a single Impact board to which it is connected, also adding support for field-sequential video. See posts here and here . The item i...

OK, you're way ahead.
I don't think cat5 or cat5e is adequate for 10gbase-t over any appreciable distance; what I have read points to cat6 or cat7 being required.
I don't know anything about XPAK / X2 conversions. They both use XAUI interconnect but I'm sure there are some electrical differences.

Re: (less) dubious Onyx350/4 - 8CPU/V12/MAD/RAD/FW/USB/FC/10Gbe

Motivation for posting updated hinv was due to putting in 10Gb Ethernet, was hoping to get big NFS performance boost with this. The card is SGI sourced Neterion XFrame and the optical interface is: Infineon XPAK 850mm Optical (it confirms to XFP standard I think). EDIT: Further reading on XPAK ... ...

Re: WTB: SCSI optical drive

Topic is kind of vague: do you mean a CD-ROM drive or a Magneto-Optical?
As many people know, the NeXT Cube (68030) was famous for shipping with a 256 MB Canon MO drive, but no hard disk.
I haven't tried it, but they should support 2.3GB DynaMO drives if you really want the MO experience.

Re: Modern monitor on SGI is possible?

The Crimson and Onyx RE systems put stereo field sync (for shutter glasses) and +10V on the pins normally used for Horizontal and Vertical Sync, respectively. If those were to be connected to a VGA monitor it could be damaged or at least confused. The RE could also be damaged depending on what kind ...

Re: Octane: System board NIC diagnostic *FAILED*

Oops, you're right! And I should have known better: apart from the Indy and O2, the hostid is, indeed, tied to the chassis (or on the I/O plane for Fuel or Tezro).
Still, I don't think it is actually needed, if you are able to use software to set the hostid.

Re: Octane: System board NIC diagnostic *FAILED*

The NIC is on the IP30 system board, not the frontplane. It looks like a battery, but is an iButton that just holds the system serial number or hostid. Additionally, it may not be necessary to actually have it in the computer, as the hostid can be patched in the running kernel using tools available ...

It's conceivable they put a sync separator into it.

Re: low level format with FX - SOLVED

It looks like when you tried using fx, you had the same drive visible (and being accessed by) an automount daemon. "Media format corrupted" etc. Setting the drive geometry should not cause any READ or WRITE activity to the drive at all, so these errors are not coming from fx. I think to su...

Re: Sunfire v880 with XVR-4000

How do I set the mac up as a terminal, as I usually make use of a laptop with Windows XP on it? (hyper-terminal) I have always liked ZTerm for this. It's an old-school System 7 application that was ported to Carbon and then to Intel for OSX 10.7 and later. It gives you control of the serial line sp...

Re: low level format with FX

you must invoke fx with the -x flag to see all of the commands.
Then use label/set/geometry to change the block size, and then /format.

You can barely make out "FORE" stamped on the IO plate. Definitely an ATM card of some sort.
(ATM cards came in different speeds, with 25 Mbit/s and 155 Mbit/s being common.)
