Oh, my what a wonderful thread! I didn't know who this Conchita guy was, but I need to start listening to him now. Anyone who can get some neckbeards riled up like that has to be doing something interesting (artistically).

You could try using mineral oil, should be significantly cheaper.

Re: Next generation SPARC64-fx

Well for tastes there are colors, looking at it from the HW design/architecture perspective it's a very elegant solution IMO. The instructions remain fixed in width so it does not add that much complexity to the fetch/decode engines in the front end, while the execution units in the back end probabl...

Re: Next generation SPARC64-fx

On an unrelated note, the instruction set for these processors is really something else - it is not your mother's SPARC. They managed to add variable-length instructions in possibly one of the nastiest ways possible. It's not that nasty IMO, SPARC has required a lot of SW nastiness anyway as it is....

I could see it if they were doing something revolutionary. But in this case there is a clear risk of taxpayers being forced to keep evolutionary dead ends alive instead.

Re: NEC SX-ACE

Yeah, they had a lot of very odd design decisions; it's basically a process shrink so they could fit more cores per chip but they ended up with 1/3 the clock speed of the SX-9 parts. Overall system throughput and bandwidth are down significantly. It also scales less in terms of cores and memory than...

Re: Mavericks

GUI and behavior-wise, Mavericks seems to be fine. At least Apple is not rocking the boat, on the desktop, as much as Microsoft is trying to force fed a touch-oriented interface down every desktop user's throat. What I find annoying is the silly arbitrary hoops Apple creates with every new release, ...

In that case I'll offer a six pack for your vintage Ferrari. After all, it's old, unsafe, unreliable and it's fuel economy is disastrous. What you really want is a Toyota Prius. Sure thing, assuming the market dynamics for vintage collective cars and severely outdated mass produced commodity comput...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

Nah. If I were starving for attention I'd head over to some forum where I had no interest at all, didn't know the first thing about it and didn't want to. Then I'd give lectures that were totally unrelated to reality. you mean a place like: Board index » Other Platforms » Miscellaneous Operating Sy...
