Re: Where's the champagne?

Personally I don't have a reason for a 24 hour home server, and to save energy I generally turn off machines not in use. Since my main home workstation is dual boot with Windows, which does require reboots, my best uptime is closer to 60 days. Same here for me - Unless I'm batching a large number o...

Re: We're having a HEAT WAVE!

Quite pleasant here in Pleasanton - high of 84 today with high temps in the 70s and low 80s projected for the next week. It's been a very mild summer this year; we had a short stretch of really warm temps in the first week of July and nothing to speak of since. Same here in Ypsitucky - short heat w...

Re: Java or C/C++?

You are right, basically. But like all others in this thread you missed the most crucial point. Developing a solid "programming" foundation is ALWAYS relative to a particular language, or family of languages. I see what you did there - But the point I was attempting to make was that learn...

Re: Java or C/C++?

Hi- a few months ago I had to make a hard decision- Should I learn Java or C/C++ for my first language? It took me 2 months to decide and I finally picked Java since it is more portable, and I am a Sun fan. Do you seasoned programmers think I made the right choice? As others have already stated in ...

I am typing this on the iPhone I have. There is an active community creating native apps that can be installed directly via the phone. I have a terminal, finder, apache, games, and other Native apps on this thing. I also have SSH so I can even FTP to root from my deskktop. Google for mod my iphone ...

Re: What to do with this "new" Mac?

I've just received a new Mac. Er... Okay, it is an old Mac. It's a Power Macintosh 7600 / 120 with a 604e 170MHz upgrade. 32 MB Main RAM / 4 MB VRAM. 1.2GB Hard disk / 4x CD-ROM I've got it OS 9 installed. Now, anything interesting to do with it? (I've installed Mozilla Suite 1.2 onto it, but it ta...

Re: WHO IS GETTING THE IPHONE...

I'll pass on the iPhone - the interface is interesting and some of the features are nice, but in reality the iPhone is a glorified iPod nano with limited wifi support and a locked in carrier. Also, for a "mobile communications device" its simply to big for my tastes.

I took an IQ test once. Rather then performing the standard IQ tests the researchers simply handed me a bucket and took a photo of the results. True story.

Re: x86-64 Linux slow...or is it RHEL5?

I had a problem with installing two NVIDIA Quadro FX4600 graphics cards in a single machine under CentOS 4 32bit (which is a recompiled Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4) with an HP xw9400 (Opteron 64's)--basically the kernel was running out of memory and NVIDIA recommends running in 64bit mode to solve t...

Re: New Nvidia 8600 8500 DX10 cards

So shift change is taking too long. Anyways all PC jokes aside, Anyone purchase a 8600 GTS or 8500 series card? Specs look kinda low, with exception to DX10 compatibility, decent price and they seem to be driving 7000 series cards down. The primary reason to purchase a non 8800-series nvidia card i...

Re: Trading Card Games

Does anyone here play any trading card games? I play Magic The Gathering and World of Warcraft TCG. I started playing MTG right before revised was released. Played for a few years, entering into tournaments whenever I had the time. I eventually sold-off most of my collection, including the power 9 ...
