Re: Using an Octane as a console/terminal?

I have to second (third?) the terminal server thing, I got a Fujitsu-Siemens-badged Avocent CPS810 for free from a friend (with firm admonitions NOT to try and update the firmware on it, apparently siemens rolled their own) and I absolutely love it. When something breaks I can just telnet into it an...

apart from the one that had succumbed to bitrot :-( Let me guess..... Foundation 2. ONC3/NFS3 actually You need to have something that can write a SGI-supported format. EFS read support is great, especially now that it's in NetBSD (so we could conceivably have a DINA v2 that will natively read the ...

Re: IRIX install from Local drive

Just as a note, NetBSD reads EFS just fine, I made a bootable USB dongle for this purpose and successfully copied all my IRIX cd:s, apart from the one that had succumbed to bitrot :-(

Re: name your SGI?

Wow, this is a pretty awesome (and long!) thread! My naming scheme sits firmly in the random category as well.. pond - 550MHz P3 PC, My first ever computer, though everything in it has been swapped n times and now serves as border gateway for my network, lives in the rack. Somehow duck@pond seemed t...

Re: Got the Octane up and running, but have some questions..

One thing that might stump you with using NFS on macs, is that they (by default, I have not investigated if this is configurable) use high source ports; this is disallowed by many nfs daemons by default, and netbsd for instance requires -noresvmnt and -noresvport in exports for it to work properly. ...

Re: What HP/DEC/Compaq do we have.

I'll toss mine in here too... AlphaPC164, the case is not original (did these even have those?) and it currently lives in a 4U PC rackmount case as my shell/web/mail server. CPU is 500MHz 21164A-2, 256MB RAM, ISP1040 to a LTO-1 tape drive and a disk to boot off, and ISP1080 connected to a HP MSA30 d...

I see, I did read some other posts here about people using less than the required parts, but perhaps that wasn't for these most powerful ones. (V6 on 1.2 IIRC)

Old Octane + V12

So silly me saw an auction for a cheap V12 and bought it, not thinking that my old octane only has Xbow 1.3. As far as I can tell, it is probably the issue, even if I also have the older PSU. I'm seeing the following things: Diagnostics from the console screen starts, but after "press ESC to qu...

Re: Convincing my octane to take custom resolutions?

Having fiddled with this off and on a few times, I've had some serious problems getting my lcd to work at (the native) 1920x1200... I then noticed that on the (old) sgi website, 1920x1200 was not listed as a supported resolution for the V6. Might this be a hint? Currently it sort of works, the octan...

Re: Xdefaults

I don't have amazon paint, but if it uses X resources you should be able to just set the resource value (likely fontList for motif and athena widget sets)
Oh, and the Xdefaults file is called '.Sgiresources' on IRIX. See also the 'editres' program and 'xrdb'...
