Re: Octane Upgrade: Success

Well, having fiddled and fiddled and fiddled and lost sleep, I finally came up with the idea of plugging the panel into a PC using vga, and lo, the screen cannot display higher than 1600x1200 on that port. I should have known.

Re: Octane Upgrade: Success

Hmh, I just made a 1600x900_60 mode using BlockSync.vfs, and it works just fine. Note that you do have to log out/in (with the resolution set to the power-on default) to have the desktop icons readjusted and such.

Re: Octane Upgrade: Success

What FPS are you using? I'm seeing the monitor recognizing 1600x1200@55 now for 1920x1200@56, with the image aligned to the left edge of the displayed area, and the displayed area centered with bars on the left and right. BTW, I get this warning: VPro_Board.def line 652: The time you specified cross...

Re: Octane Upgrade: Success

I tried the stock ones first, to not much luck, they display, but like what happened with my V6, the monitor thinks it's 1600x1200 and somehow stretches the image to fit (or catches some odd sync pulse and goes all green and widely offset). With schleusel's 1680x1050_60 mode, I get a perfect picture...

Octane Upgrade: Success

I just wanted to drop a line that I just operated on my Octane slipping in a new frontplane. It works, and now I am running with the V12! :D Now if only I knew how to construct a video format that my LG245 would accept. It has this tick that it wants to set the panel to 1600x1200 whenever I try to l...

Re: MXI/MXE using 1920x1200

The V6 also has a nice artificial resolution block of 1600x1200 (at least, that's the highest listed resolution there was on sgi.com, and I've had no luck coaxing it higher). I suspect the older boards don't have these though.

Re: MXI/MXE using 1920x1200

Hmm, theoretically I guess it should work, the SSI/E board has 27MB of framebuffer memory (nekochan wiki).

Re: Using an Octane as a console/terminal?

I have to second (third?) the terminal server thing, I got a Fujitsu-Siemens-badged Avocent CPS810 for free from a friend (with firm admonitions NOT to try and update the firmware on it, apparently siemens rolled their own) and I absolutely love it. When something breaks I can just telnet into it an...

Re: IRIX install from Local drive

Just as a note, NetBSD reads EFS just fine, I made a bootable USB dongle for this purpose and successfully copied all my IRIX cd:s, apart from the one that had succumbed to bitrot :-(

Wow, this is a pretty awesome (and long!) thread! Re: Got the Octane up and running, but have some questions..

One thing that might stump you with using NFS on macs, is that they (by default, I have not investigated if this is configurable) use high source ports; this is disallowed by many nfs daemons by default, and netbsd for instance requires -noresvmnt and -noresvport in exports for it to work properly. ...

I'll toss mine in here too... AlphaPC164, the case is not original (did these even have those?) and it currently lives in a 4U PC rackmount case as my shell/web/mail server. CPU is 500MHz 21164A-2, 256MB RAM, ISP1040 to a LTO-1 tape drive and a disk to boot off, and ISP1080 connected to a HP MSA30 d...
