Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Easy way to tell who's trying to phone home, run iptraf on your firewall:

http://iptraf.seul.org

Of course, if there's a secret wireless phone home device in the thing you'll have to build a tinfoil hat for it... 8-)

Presumably this is the Lucent power supply? There's a used one on ebay ATM for 39 dollars, which is about as cheap as you'll ever find one...

Re: Octane no power?

What are you doing with the power switch? Octane power switches are notoriously sticky. Make sure it's not stuck in some indeterminate state between on and off...

Huh, they've just got the thing smeared with Kapton tape! Maybe they take the tape off before final assembly? Seems weird, I don't think there's any adhesive tape that actually ages gracefully...

I'm afraid you are out of luck here: Solaris 11.x does not work on SB2500.

Just goes to show how much I've been keeping up on Solaris development, which is to say, not at all... ;)

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

Internal history wise, Jim Clark's 1998 book "Netscape Time" has some doozies on what was going on at SGI in the early 90's, and why those events convinced him that the only way to save his sanity was to leave the company, the company he created...

Re: Solaris 11.4 open beta

I'm still running 10 on my Blade 2500, with the intention of not upgrading again until 12 came out, but since the likelihood of that ever occurring seems to be on a permanent downward spiral, I guess I'll give 11.4 a try. And if it messes up by box I'll just start trolling Alan Coopersmith... 8-)

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

I don't have much experience of SGI machines, but I do remember being in high school and college in the early-mid 90s and lusting after the Indy, especially the WebForce version as it was built for web production or so they claimed. Hey, the guy who spearheaded the WebForce project, John McCrea, is...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

You only have to listen to the opening track on "The Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd (recorded by Allan Parsons at Abby Road Studios) on a high fidelity system with a frequency response down to 10Hz and you will understand what I mean when it comes to the recording methods used in th...

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

I absolutely love floppy drives so those are always a plus. Having SCSI is a plus too. When I worked at Northern Telecom way back when we were designing and building our own automated test equipment that we controlled with Z80s running CP/M and booting from 8-inch floppies. Gosh, the memories... 8-)
