Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Not feel like sleeping yet, so watching Jurassic Park from television and playing with Polybrush sculpting tools. Is pretty good for shaping the general form after some practice.

Looks more like Ford Maverick than the Cortina. I had -75 Ford Capri once, so have soft spot for old Fords.

American muscle cars look great but are really only fast on straight road.

Re: What is your favorite thing about messing with old computers?

What? RISCiX on the Archimedes was a terrible idea, irrespective of the cost. It's an 8 MHz machine with a 3.5" ST-412 drive (so 60 MB is about as big as you can go), a 4MB maximum RAM capacity, a framebuffer that steals memory bandwidth, and a 32k page size. The situation is barely improved w...

Re: What is your favorite thing about messing with old computers?

My favourite thing has to be, that after 20-30 years I can finally afford those. Truth is that everything was much more fun when I was a child and microcomputers ruled the world. Now children play with mobile phones and tablets, but they will never experience that magical time when computers were fu...

Re: New toy

Windows 10 is really braindead when it comes to updating. Love it when I leave something rendering for the night and in the morning computer has restarted, resulting in no rendering and destroying all the work as had not remembered to save the damn thing before hitting render button. When there are ...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Sitting in Helsinki and preparing for half marathon. Will be hard as have not trained almost at all this year.

I ran one time 5 kilometers last week and it felt pretty bad.

Re: Good Heavens the LaserWriter IIg is complex!

I had fully loaded NeXTstation Turbo Color but was not overly impressed about it. It felt slow and in my opinion should not feel like that when you are running the software originally intended at the time. Too much disk accessing for my liking and the operating system was also in German language, th...

Playing with Metasequoia and toying around with Renderman. Very relaxing.

Re: Should I take the dive?

but my Dad actually has a RiscPC SA as his main workstation to get things done... I'm impressed. Does he do this in RISC OS or something else? RISC OS has plenty of good software to get things done and personally I would take RISC OS over linux any day. I am pretty much only using my Windows PC for...

Re: LGR - Tech Tales - What Happened to 3Dfx & Voodoo

My first Voodoo card was Hercules Stingray 128/3D but sadly had to revert my overclocked AMD 5x86 (486) system back to 133 MHz from the 160 MHz it was running, or otherwise the 3D acceleration would not work. It was pretty nice system still and certainly could hold its own vs early Pentium systems. ...

Re: Linux desktop recommendations?

My point is that many people for an example with Apple systems and OS X are still using the same software that works just as fine on Windows and some even better as the Windows versions usually come first and other versions are just put together with left hand and in a hurry. Windows is not the best...

Re: Linux desktop recommendations?

Real question is if there is anything on Linux that is not available for Windows first? Otherwise there is no real reason to use Linux at all and might just as well use Windows as Windows versions are most likely better in every way anyway. Linux is good for browsing the web and lot of things need t...

Re: Actual emacs user in the wild

My first PC as a kid was lowly IBM PS/1 with 386 processor, 2 megs of memory, huge 40 MB hard disk Small correction. Originally, PS/1 had just a 4.77 MHz 8088 processor, 40K of ROM. No hard disk. The XT had a 10 MB fixed disk, though. The 386 processor & bigger hard disks came only with the PS/...

Re: Actual emacs user in the wild

My first PC as a kid was lowly IBM PS/1 with 386 processor, 2 megs of memory, huge 40 MB hard disk and it had IBM DOS 4.0 installed. One day I accidentally loaded EDLIN once just to check what it was and I could not even figure out how to close that damn thing without the help of a power button. See...

No I forbid the use of both as they are evil.

But you can freely use Nano instead...
