Bent pins on Octane front plane

So, I bought an Octane on *bay a couple weeks ago, my first. It has been an adventure. First, the power supply did not want to work at all. After taking the whole thing apart, it turned out that a cable had been unplugged. I went ahead and checked all the caps with an ESR meter anyway, they all seem...

I'm curious what a dual vpro XIO carrier looks like. Does anybody have a picture?

Re: What to do with a VW320?

Hah, my wife took one look at that beast on HER dining room table and gave me a look. I had to put it away until I could clear off my workbench and set it up there. That will probably happen this weekend, so I'll post some pictures then. I swear, some people just don't understand :/

Thank you for this series. It was a great recap and exactly the kind of gem I love to find on YouTube!

Re: What to do with a VW320?

Oh, and back in 1996 when the O2 was released, I was rocking a 486DX-33 with a full 16MB of RAM and an amazing 500MB HDD. The O2 was a dream beyond imagining for me. Sometimes I miss that old 486, but if I'm honest with myself it was junk. I cobbled it together from a few used parts. It was slow, br...

Re: What to do with a VW320?

I completely agree about preserving vintage machines for what they were. I would not mess with a working O2, Octane, Amiga, Commodore, BeBox, PDP, etc... Those are all unique systems with unique cultures. However, Visual Workstations are not really special other than the case design and maybe the Co...

What to do with a VW320?

TL;DR what would you do/demo with a VW 320? So, I wanted a Visual Workstation 320 for a while. I have always loved the design, especially the sliding front door. Yesterday, I bought one for $200 from a guy on craigslist. I won't lie, I planned to gut it and make it my main VR machine (love my Oculus...

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

Octane (original) > Indigo > VW320 When I was an undergraduate ('99-'01) I was one of the few coders in a digital media lab/studio. We had a wall of generic PCs, a wall of G3 Macs on OS8/9, and a couple of SGI O2 machines. The PCs were always taken, the Macs were really only good for music productio...

Re: SGI 320/540 Win2k drivers

Wow, thanks for this. I just got a VW320 yesterday, with Win2k preinstalled. It has all the CDs, but they are for NT4. I was afraid to wipe the system without win2k drivers.

Tezro in Bay Area, CA (not mine)

Somebody has put up a Tezro in the Sunnyvale, CA. I've never been a huge fan of the Tezro, and $2500 seems a bit high to me, but I thought I would stick it up here in case somebody was looking for one.

Running 1600sw with Laptop LVDS Driver

TL;DR has anybody tried using one of the HDMI+VGA+DVI to LVDS boards to drive a 1600sw? I was recently gifted a 1600sw. I have no idea if it works. There is no power supply, and I do not have a machine with LDI. I ordered a correctly specced power supply from *bay, so I'll know if it even powers on ...

Re: Onyx R10k IR deskside on the 'Bay

Congrats!

Took me all day, plus a trip to the Computer History Museum, to convince my wife to let me buy it and boom, already sold. Oh well, just glad it isn't going to be converted into a beer fridge or something.

Re: Onyx R10k IR deskside on the 'Bay

I have family in Tampa, visit there a couple times a year. I want to start an SGI collection, but a broken Onyx 10k IR seems like a really big first bite. I know that you cannot speak to this specific machine, but does anybody here know how hard it is to repair Onyx systems in general?
